ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Sixty-three Purdue student-athletes received Academic All-Big Ten recognition when the conference office announced its lists of fall honorees on Wednesday. The number easily eclipsed the 46 Boilermaker student-athletes recognized last fall. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
The women's cross country team led the way with 16 members being recognized, followed by football (14), men's cross country (12), women's soccer (11) and volleyball (10). Volleyball, which takes on Illinois in the regional semifinal on Friday, had two-thirds of its roster feted by the conference for academic prowess. The men's cross country team improved its total from a year ago by eight student-athletes.
Some individual standouts that were recognized were men's cross country runner Matthew McClintock, the first All-American at Purdue in the sport since 1987, women's harrier Linsey Daluga, Purdue's top finisher at the Great Lakes Regional, football tight end Justin Sinz and center Robert Kugler, who both earned Academic All-District honors, Hadley Stuart, soccer's leader in assists, and AVCA first team All-Region selections Val Nichol and KiKi Jones from volleyball.
Volleyball's Faye Adelaja was recognized as one of 20 Big Ten fall student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA.
The conference office also awards Academic All-Big Ten distinction in the winter and spring seasons and will present the Distinguished Scholar Award at the end of the academic year. Student-athletes eligible for the Distinguished Scholar Award must be letterwinners in at least their second year in residence at their institution. Qualifying student-athletes must have earned a GPA of 3.7 or higher for the current academic year, excluding summer school. The Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award was established by conference Faculty Representatives as an addition to the conference's Academic All-Big Ten program.
