AVON – Defending state champion Martinsville defended its Avon Invitational title Aug. 10 as the second-ranked Artesians posted a 313 to down runner-up No. 24 Zionsville by 24 strokes under brutally hot conditions in a 10-team tournament at Prestwick.

No. 13 Lafayette Jefferson (347) placed third behind the medalist-winning 75 of senior Regan Pittard, with 22nd-ranked Ben Davis earning a fifth-player tiebreaker over Fishers for fourth after each shot 359.

Martinsville saw all five of its players finish in the Top 10 despite temperatures flirting with the 100-degree mark. The Artesians got a 39-37–76 from second-place junior Molly English plus a fourth-place 37-40–77 from senior Jaclyn Schindler to go with the 37-41–78 of senior Shelby Wilson (fifth) and the 40-42–82 of junior Mariah Richardson (seventh).

Martinsville coach Sharon Most was pleased with her team’s effort, especially after coming off a 325 in a fourth-place finish the day before at the Trojan Invitational won by top-ranked Roncalli.

“We were a little bit off at The Legends, so I was happy to see the 313,” Most said. “Roncalli is the real deal.

“It’ll be interesting when we play the whole thing (in the Hall of Fame Classic Sept. 4) at Battle Ground when it’s 5,600 or 5,700 yards, so I’m looking forward to that.”

Fishers senior Kelli Witt also went 39-37 in tying English for second, while Zionsville’s Lucy Stevens posted a 41-37–78 to tie Wilson for fifth.

Ben Davis coach Dave Patz thinks his girls are off to a solid start and that placing fourth out of 12 teams (Greensburg and North Central (Indianapolis) did not field complete four-score efforts) was a nice finish.

“However, I believe that we are capable of playing better,” said Patz, the man in charge of the girls state rankings for the Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association. “We are still not scoring from inside 100 yards the way I thought we would, and we are still having too many big numbers from experienced players – hence the high score of 359.

“So, we need to continue to improve to reach our ultimate goals. The good news is the kids have been very focused in practice and should get better over the course of the season, and we are looking forward to playing in our Ben Davis Invitational this weekend.”
