W SECTIONALS: Times announced for 75th individual team tournament

January 26, 2013
By E. Shawn Aylsworth of Hoosier Authority

The start of the winter state tournament season is marked this Saturday, Jan. 26, at 32 sectional sites as the 75th Annual IHSAA Wrestling State Tournament gets under way.

Three hundred sixteen schools will be represented this weekend by 5,640 athletes, with the top four contestants in each of the 14 weight classes advancing to one of 16 individual regionals Feb. 2.

While competing as individuals Saturday, participants also will be accumulating points for their school toward a sectional championship. In a change from recent years, the ensuing regional, semistate, and state championship teams will be determined through points scored by competitors at those respective levels of the tournament, reverting to the system employed for decades prior to 1995-96.

Sectional championship teams have always been determined through the accumulation of points by individuals.
