GBB SECTIONALS: Postseason dates, sites for girls basketball

December 10, 2012
By E. Shawn Aylsworth of Hoosier Authority

The lineup for the 39th Annual IHSAA Girls Basketball State Tournament has been finalized. Here’s a look at all the postseason sites and when the teams will be in action, courtesy of ihsaa.org:

SECTIONALS
Dates: Tuesday, Feb. 5; Wednesday, Feb. 6; Friday, Feb. 8; Saturday, Feb. 9
Times: 7 p.m. single game, 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. doubleheaders, 7:30 p.m. championship (all times local)
Admission: $6 session, $10 season
About the draw (Sunday, Jan. 27): To conduct the random drawing for the girls basketball state tournament, the IHSAA places ping-pong balls representing each school in a given sectional into a “lottery” air-mix machine. A fan in the bottom of the machine blows the balls around the inside of the transparent container, and air then forces each ball up through a tube in random order. For example, the first ball retrieved from the machine will be the visiting team in Game 1 with the second ball representing the home team in Game 1. The third ball to come out is the visitor in Game 2 with the fourth ball the home team in Game 2. That same method is followed through all 64 sectionals and 16 regionals.
Sectional formats (subject to change):

  • 5-team fields: Will play one first-round game on Tuesday at 7 p.m., two semifinals on Friday beginning at 6 p.m., and the championship on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
