GSw HALL OF FAME: #4 Chesterton downs #6 Penn, #3 Zionsville for title

Fourth-ranked Chesterton didn’t win the battle Dec. 1 at the annual Hall of Fame Classic at Franklin Community, but the Trojans certainly won the war in rolling up 507 points to defeat No. 6 Penn (412) and third-ranked defending state runner-up Zionsville (375) for the girls swimming team title at the nine-school event.

Penn, which placed third at last year’s state finals, led everyone with eight wins, but Chesterton overcame three less victories with superior depth to prevail. No. 13 Fishers (359) finished third, followed by No. 35 Castle (256), #22 Fort Wayne Snider (196), Terre Haute South (125), No. 28 host Franklin Community (119), and Bloomington North (71).

Chesterton, a fifth-place finisher at the 2012 state finals, got a pair of wins from both freshman Vanessa Krause, who took the 50-yard butterfly (:26.18) and the 200 fly (2:06.92), and senior Julia Campbell, who won the 1,000 freestyle (10:27.87) and led a 1-2 finish along with classmate Kate Curley in the 200 backstroke (2:07.86).

The Trojans also captured the 400 free relay in 3:38.07.

Penn, meanwhile, boasted triple winners in junior Bethany Galat (1:53.98 in the 200 free, 4:23.72 in the 400 individual medley, :24.02 in the 50 free) and classmate Annie Spalding (:59.05 in the 100 IM, :29.77 in the 50 breaststroke, 2:20.23 in the 200 breast). The Kingsmen also won both the 200 free relay (1:38.18) and the 400 medley relay (3:57.20).
