INDIANAPOLIS – There is no doubt that Class 4A sixth-ranked Lawrence North had its Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference opener with Ben Davis circled on the team calendar. For almost 10 months now.
Ben Davis, you see, had ousted LN from last year’s state tournament in overtime of the regional semifinal, 48-47, back on Feb. 18. And you know what they say about payback.

The Wildcats got it on doses Nov. 29, limiting the visiting Giants to just 21 percent shooting (7 of 33) and forcing 38 turnovers – including 28 steals – while leading 21-6 and 51-17 at the first two stops en route to a 78-29 victory.
So why improbable, you say? Consider this: Ben Davis had not dropped a game by double digits since losing 56-45 to eventual state champion Carmel in the 2008 regional – their last loss for their next 82 games till another regional defeat at the hands of the Greyhounds, 65-62, in 2011.
Lawrence North (3-1) utilized first-year coach Chris Giffin’s full-court defensive pressure to create all sorts of fireworks at the other end, outscoring the Giants by a whopping 38-5 in points off turnovers and outworking them with a second-chance points advantage of 20-7.
And the Wildcats distributed the damage offensively, putting four players in double figures.
Senior forward 6-foot Mikale Rogers led the way with 17 points, while 5’5” junior point guard Ana Owens and sophomore guard/forward Lamina Cooper each added 14 and junior forward/center Destiny Washington had 12.
The scary news for the rest of the MIC (and Class 4A)? It could have been worse as Lawrence North only shot 36 percent (27 of 75), including just 1 of 7 from behind the 3-point line.
But LN, which acquired two dozen of those turnovers in its blizzard of first-half defense, was able to take 42 more shots than the Giants, who lost their third straight game for the first time in seven seasons.
Ben Davis was led by the eight points of sophomore forward Briana Fox.
Both teams are off till Dec. 4: the opening round of the Marion County Tournament. LN will host Perry Meridian (2-3) and BD will host defending 4A state champion North Central (Indianapolis) (1-3), with a possible rematch coming in the Dec. 8 semifinals at Speedway.
The line score:
Team Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 FINAL
Ben Davis 6 11 6 6 29
Lawrence North 21 30 13 14 78
