CAPITAL CITY CLASSIC @ Perry Meridian
Top-ranked two-time defending state champion Perry Meridian won eight of 14 weight classes Nov. 17 as the host Falcons defended their eight-team Capital City Classic title with 309 points at the state’s premiere Week 1 event.
No. 13 Warren Central (251) placed second in the team standings after crowning five champions, with third-place Franklin Central (208.5) taking the other individual title.
“We have work to do,” said Perry Meridian coach Jim Tonte. “It was a solid start, but we need to improve to make a run for a title.”
Eight of Perry Meridian’s nine top-seeded wrestlers prevailed – 113-pound Jacob Cottey (seventh at last year’s state finals at 106), 126 Brandon James (third at 113), 132 Cody LeCount (defending state runner-up at 126), 138 Nick Bova (seventh at 138), 152 Keanu Cooper, 160 Riley McClurg, 182 Jake Massengale (defending state runner-up at 170), and 285 Donte Winfield (state qualifier at 285) – with PM’s other No. 1 seed placing second.
The Falcons also had three other runner-up finishes, with all three wrestlers outperforming their 3 seeds by one spot to rack up extra points in the team title race.
Meanwhile, Warren Central provided the day’s two finals upsets as Matt McKinney scored an 8-0 major decision over Perry’s Brett Johnson at 106 and 3 seed Deondre Wilson shocked No. 1 seed Andrice Martin of Franklin Central (a state qualifier last year at 120) with 6-4 decision at 120.
