GSoc 1A FINAL: #3 Mishawaka Marian turns tables on #3 Providence, 2-0

In a rematch of last year’s Class A state championship, it was third-ranked Mishawaka Marian turning the tables on defending champion No. 4 Providence with a 2-0 victory Oct. 27 at IUPUI’s Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium for its first girls soccer championship.
Both teams were evenly matched offensively as Marian took 12 shots to Providence’s 11, but the Knights were able to capitalize on their chances. They opened the scoring in the 10th minute of play with a goal from sophomore D.J. Veldman, who buried a shot after an assist from senior Gabby Veldman.
Their second goal came in the 30th minute when a perfectly placed free kick from sophomore Shannon Hendricks found the back of the net.
Marian, under the direction of coach Djamel Charmet, finishes its championship year with a record of 18-4-2. Providence, coached by Dave Smith, ends at 14-5-3 in the school’s second straight state finals appearance.
Providence’s Duncan named Mental Attitude Award winner
Erin Duncan of Providence was named winner of the 2012 Mental Attitude Award for Class A girls soccer by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner, presented a scholarship check for $1,000 to the school in her name.
Since 1989, more than $785,000 in college scholarships has been presented by Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance to deserving high school students in Indiana.
A member of the National Honor Society, Erin is ranked first in her class. She is a Student Ambassador and Eucharistic Minister and serves as president of the Spanish Club.
Duncan is a three-year starter at midfield for the Pioneers. In her time on the pitch, she has helped lead Providence to back-to-back state finals appearances, including the 2011 title. the daughter of Elaine and Jerry Duncan of Sellersburg also plays basketball and runs track.
