The Associated Press has released its second set of polls for the 2012 Indiana high school football season, and your leaders heading into Week 2 remain Class 5A Carmel, 4A Indianapolis Cathedral, 3A Indianapolis Chatard, 2A Fort Wayne Luers, and Class A Lafayette Central Catholic.

Of note are the first four schools in Class 5A: holdover No. 1 Carmel, holdover No. 2 Warren Central, No. 3 Ben Davis (bumping up from fourth), and Center Grove (climbing from seventh to fourth). That’s four straight Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference schools at the top of the state’s largest class – think some of the smaller 5A schools aren’t drooling over the addition of a sixth class next year?

Oh. And after falling by one point on the last play of a 42-41 shootout with Indianapolis Ritter at Lucas Oil Stadium kicked off the 2012 season in high-flying, small-school style, Heritage Christian plummets five spots from fifth to 10th in this week’s 2A poll. Go figure …

Elsewhere, we find lots of movement after season-opening games over the weekend. Witness …

  • 5A: Avon is the other big-school riser in ascending from eighth to sixth.
  • 4A: Evansville Reitz swaps spots with Fort Wayne Dwenger in moving from third to second, Leo inches up from eighth to seventh, and Jasper mini-jumps from 12th to 10th.
  • 3A: Jimtown jimmies its way from third to second, Mishawaka Marian moves from seventh to fifth, Western Boone rockets from 10th to sixth, and Brownstown bumps up from 11th to 10th.
  • 2A: Indianapolis Ritter rises from fourth to third, Bremen goes from sixth to fourth, Andrean rises from seventh to fifth, Speedway moves up from eighth to sixth, and Churubusco climbs from 10th to seventh.
  • 1A: Indianapolis Scecina scoots up from fourth to third, Milan moves from sixth to fourth, South Adams ascends from eighth to sixth, Adams Central leaps from 15th to eighth, North Central (Farmersburg) rises from 12th to ninth, and Whiting goes from 14th into a tie for 10th with Southern Wells (previously 12th).
