Two-time defending state champion Hamilton Southeastern signaled it has no intention of falling short on a third consecutive crown by firing the best nine-hole round in school history Aug. 15 as the third-ranked Royals fired a 1-under 143 in a 41-stroke victory over Pendleton Heights at Stony Creek.

The 143 broke the old mark set in 2003 on The Ridge at Ironwood by one stroke as Mary Ellen Romero eagled the first, got pars on the next five holes, then finished with 3 birdies for a 31 – also a school record.

Lauren Kirkwood had three birdies on her way to a 35, while Kat Leighty shot a 38 and Marissa Holliday had a 39 to put a close to the scalding 153. The HSE effort was rounded out by Phoebe Cha and Mia DelPrince (41s), Courtney Talbot (42), and Ciara McAree (45).
