The win marked the first state title in softball for Plainfield, which was in its first state finals appearance.
At the plate, Plainfield was led by junior Maggie Stahl, who had one hit and the game-winning run. Junior Brook Bryant scored the tying run on a walk before Stahl slid under the tag after a wild pitch. Sophomore Mackenzie Reeder also contributed an RBI in the inning, driving home senior Hallie Johanningsmeier.
Getting the win for the Quakers was senior Courtney Collins (15-4), who gave up only one run on five hits in seven innings of work while striking out nine.
Fifteenth-year coach Paris Seibold’s Vikings were paced by sophomores Erin Rethlake and Alyssa Hiple. Rethlake had two hits in three at-bats, while Hiple added one hit and an RBI that came in the fourth inning for the game’s first run.
Plainfield, led by 11th-year coach Brad Beaman, finished the year with a 23-9 record. Huntington North finished the season at 23-8.
