Three hundred seventy-three teams were drawn and placed into brackets May 10 for the start of the 28th Annual IHSAA Softball State Tournament Series.

Sectional action runs May 21-26, with the 64 survivors moving into a one-game regional round Tuesday, May 29. From there, 32 teams will square off in a four-team semistate Saturday, June 2, with the four state championship games scheduled for Saturday, June 9, at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis.

Among the top-ranked teams in the most recent poll from the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association …

• Class 4A No. 1 defending state champion Carmel begins its tournament run at home against North Central (Indianapolis) in Sectional 8.
• 3A top-ranked Mishawaka Marian drew host South Bend St. Joseph’s in the Sectional 19 opener.
• 2A No. 1 defending champ South Putnam will face Covenant Christian (Indianapolis) in the Sectional 44 bye game at Cascade.
• Class A’s top-ranked Rising Sun will take on host Jac-Cen-Del in the first game of Sectional 60.

Among the other defending state champions, Roncalli has moved up to Class 4A after winning last year’s 3A crown and will host Lawrence Central in the opening game of Sectional 10. Class A champion and home-standing Tecumseh, meanwhile, drew New Harmony in Sectional 64.

Home team: The second-named team in each pairing is the designated home team, except when it advances by virtue of a bye. (Exception: In six-team sectionals, the teams drawing the bye will play in the second semifinal game – Game 4 – and will be the visitor in the championship game.)
About the draw: To conduct the random drawing for the softball state tournament, the IHSAA places ping-pong balls representing each school in a given sectional into a lottery-style, air-mix machine. A motorized fan in the bottom of the machine blows the balls around the inside of the transparent container, and air then forces each ball up through a tube in random order. (For example, the first ball retrieved from the machine will be the visiting team in Game 1, with the second ball representing the home team in Game 1. The third ball to come out is the visitor in Game 2, and the fourth ball the home team in Game 2.) That same method is followed through all 64 sectionals and eight semistates.
