SB: 3A #11 New Palestine opens with 12-2 romp over Whiteland

March 21, 2012
By E. Shawn Aylsworth of Hoosier Authority

Host New Palestine scored in every inning – including sixth runs in the fourth – March 19 as the Dragons opened their season with a 12-2 six-inning victory over visiting Whiteland.

Four batters had two hits apiece for New Pal: senior Audrey East, senior Liza Fiers, senior Clare Myers, and junior Erin Lehman. Lehman had a game-high three runs batted in while scoring three times and had the game’s lone home run.

Junior Lizzie Garrison got the win for New Pal – ranked 11th in the finals Class 3A poll last year (2012 remain unavailable …) – scattering nine hits but only two runs (both earned) in 5 2/3 innings pitched. Freshman Kaylin McMurray tossed the final out.

Whiteland was led by senior Paige Settles, who went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Senior Rachel Sullivan took the loss, allowing eight hits and nine runs (five earned) while walking three in 3 2/3 innings. Sophomore reliever Destiny Graham hurled the last 1 1/3 innings, giving up five hits and three runs (two earned) while surrendering four walks.
