Senior Jessica Rupright of Class 3A top-ranked Norwell has been named the 2012 Indianapolis Star Indiana Miss Basketball. The 37th Miss Basketball joins 1977 winner Teri Rosinski as Knights to have won the prestigious award.
The Miami (Ohio)-bound 6’2” center collected 41 of the 206 votes from state coaches and media members, easily surpassing runner-up Nariah Taylor of 4A state champion North Central (Indianapolis) (19 votes) and third-place Jessica Brown of 3A runner-up Mt. Vernon (Fortville) (17). Thirty-six girls earned at least one vote.
Rupright – Norwell’s career leader in points (1,591) and rebounds (728) – averaged 21.2 points and 8.0 rebounds per game while shooting 53 percent from the field this year for Norwell, whose season ended with a 54-49 regional semifinal loss to No. 3 NorthWood in a game decided in the last minute.
She averaged 11.7 points and 7.1 boards as a freshman starter on a squad that went 21-2, averaged 15.1 ppg and 7.1 rpg as a sophomore, and 21.0 points and 9.6 rebounds as a junior. Norwell went a sizzling 84-10 and won two sectional championships during the Rupright era.
“We’re going to miss her a lot because she’s just not the type of kid that you can replace,” 15th-year Norwell coach Eric Thornton told the Star. “She’s not only a great player but an outstanding person with great character.”
