Here is an in-depth look at the teams comprising the 37th Annual IHSAA Girls Basketball State Finals, courtesy of ihsaa.org:

Site: Hulman Center, 200 N. 8th St., Terre Haute
Admission: Session $15, season $25
Reserved single-session tickets may be purchased at the participating schools the week of the state finals (contact participating schools for ticket-distribution hours). Any remaining tickets will be available game day at the ticket office at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. 
Home team: The winners of the north semistates will be the designated home teams.

Class A State Championship: #1 Fort Wayne Canterbury (24-2) vs. #5 Northeast Dubois (22-4). 10:30a
Class 2A State Championship: #1 Evansville Mater Dei (26-1) vs.  #2 Fort Wayne Luers (21-5). Follows Class A game

SESSION II
Class 3A State Championship: #7 Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran (20-5) vs. #2 Mt. Vernon (Fortville) (23-5). 6p
Class 4A State Championship: North Central (Indianapolis) (22-5) vs. #10 Columbus North (23-3). Follows Class 3A game

Class A: Fort Wayne Canterbury shoots for its fourth state championship, while Northeast Dubois is playing for the school’s first in any sport.

#5 Northeast Dubois Jeeps
• Ranked #5 in ICGSA Class A poll.
• Northeast Dubois seeking first state championship in any sport in school history.
• Jeeps making their second appearance in girls basketball state finals (2005). 2005 team finished as state runner-up, losing by one point to Tri-Central.
• Saturday’s championship game will be the first ranked opponent the team has faced during state tournament.
• 14-2 vs. other Class A schools, 7-1 vs. 2A teams, 1-1 vs. 3A schools.
• Tied for second place (6-2) with Class A defending state champion Vincennes Rivet in the Blue Chip Conference this season and behind first-place Barr-Reeve (8-0).
• School leads the state with 10 consecutive sectional championships. Since the beginning of class sports in 1998, Northeast Dubois has won its sectional title 14 out of 15 years (2002). The school had never won a sectional prior to1998.
• Head coach Alan Matheis is 183-87 in 11 years at the school.
• What exactly is a “Jeep”? Upon deciding on Jeep as the school mascot, a group of 15 Dubois HS basketball players approached Principal and Coach Dallas Ferguson with their decision. Ferguson concurred, and Dubois HS -- the school that gave way to the current school -- had an official mascot. According to Wikipedia, Eugene the Jeep is a character in the Thimble Theatre comic strip, which stars Popeye. His first appearance was in the March 16, 1936, strip and is known for his superhuman abilities.

#1 Fort Wayne Canterbury Cavaliers
• Ranked #1 in ICGSA Class A poll and #17 in non-class IBCA poll.
• Fort Wayne Canterbury making fourth state finals appearancein five years. School is 3-0 in previous state championship games.
• Cavaliers lead the state regardless of class in scoring average at 82.2 ppg. 4A Fishers is a distant second at 70.1 ppg.
• Also lead the state in margin of victory at 30.4 ppg.
• Saturday’s championship game will be the second ranked opponent the team has faced during tournament. Defeated No. 4 Oregon-Davis 64-45 to win regional crown.
• School won its ninth straight sectional championship this year.
• 9-0 vs. other Class A schools, 3-0 vs. 2A teams, 6-0 vs. 3A schools, 5-2 vs. 4A teams.
• Defeated 3A state finalist Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran, 79-70 on Jan. 14.
• Canterbury has three players averaging better than 17.0 ppg, led by Kindell Fincher who ranks among the state leaders at 21.2 ppg. She also is among state’s best with 12.2 rpg. Bailey Farley (18.7 ppg) and Darby Maggard (17.4 ppg) follow.
• Scott Kreiger picked up his 250th career victory as coach (250-88 in 14 years) during the semistate contest against Riverton Parke.
• School is looking for second state title this year. Cavaliers won the Class A boys soccer state championship Oct. 29.

Class 2A: The 2A state championship will be decided between the two top-ranked teams.

#2 Evansville Mater Dei Wildcats
• Ranked #1 in 2A ICGSA poll and #15 in non-class IBCA poll.
• School making first appearance in girls basketball state finals after posting first regional and semistate championships this year.
• Wildcats broke through regional this year after six previous trips to that round of the state tournament.
• Mater Dei ranks seventh in state regardless of class in average margin of victory (21.9).
• Saturday’s championship will be fourth game against a ranked opponent this tournament. Defeated #5 Southridge 46-41 (OT) in sectional semis, #8 Sullivan 51-35 in regional semis, and #3 Triton Central 51-37 in semistate.
• Only loss this season was a 64-63 OT setback at Southern Indiana Conference rival Evansville Bosse on Dec. 14. Wildcats (6-1) finished second in league race to Bosse (7-0).
• Maura Muensterman ranks among the state leaders at 22.5 ppg. Tori Schickel averages 15.4 ppg and 7.5 rpg.
• Head coach Steve Goans is 80-35 in five years at the school.

#1 Fort Wayne Luers Knights
• Ranked #2 in 2A ICGSA poll, No. 16 in non-class IBCA poll.
• Bishop Luers playing for a state-leading seventh championship in girls basketball and appearing for third year in a row (runner-up to Austin in 2010 and defeated Brownstown in 2011).
• Knights are 6-2 in state championship games and lead the state in girls basketball state championships (6), championship game appearances (9), and state finals appearances (9).
• Team returns three starters from last year’s state championship game: Brooke Ridley, Miracle Woods, and Catherine Barnett. Ridley and Woods are expected to start in their third consecutive state championship game on Saturday.
• Split two games with 3A finalist and Summit Athletic Conference rival Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran.
• Saturday’s championship will be first game against a ranked opponent this tournament.
• Team won its state-leading ninth semistate championship with its 49-36 win over Seeger.
• Denny Renier is 63-15 in his third year as head coach. He served 22 seasons as a Luers assistant coach.
• Knights playing for school’s 20th IHSAA state title overall and second this year (football team defeated Evansville Mater Dei, 41-17, in 2A championship game Nov. 25).

Class 3A: Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran aims for its second title in three years, while its been 35 years since Mt. Vernon (Fortville) last played for a championship.

#2 Mt. Vernon (Fortville) Marauders
• Ranked #2 in 3A ICGSA poll and #18 in non-class IBCA poll.
• Mt. Vernon playing in first state championship game in 35 years (1977). Only Hancock County school to ever advance to the girls basketball state finals.
• That 1977 state runner-up team finished 16-1 under coach Carolyn Oldfather losing to East Chicago Roosevelt in the second year of the girls state tournament.
• Team ranks 12th in state regardless of class in average margin of victory at 20.5 ppg.
• Saturday’s championship will be second game against a ranked opponent this tournament. Defeated #10 Edgewood 58-36 to win regional championship.
• That victory over Edgewood also ended a seven-year regional championship drought.
• Won Hoosier Heritage Conference championship this season with 7-0 record.
• Marauders were among the four teams that participated inthe prestigious Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Tournament this season in New Castle (finished third, winning the consolation game).
• Head coach Julie Shelton is 220-97 in 14 years at the school. Won her 200th game as coach in 71-60 road win at Hamilton Heights on Nov. 26. Shelton played in the 1987 state semifinals with Seymour HS, was a state finalist in the shot put in 1987, helped her volleyball team to 1988 and 1989 volleyball state finals, and won the 1989 IHSAA volleyball Mental Attitude Award.

#7 Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran Cadets
• Ranked #7 in 3A ICGSA poll.
• Concordia aiming for second 3A state championship in three years. Defeated Rushville in 2010.
• One of only three teams to advance past regionals each of the last three seasons (Fort Wayne Luers, Fort Wayne Canterbury).
• Cadets will face their third top six team in last four games Saturday. Defeated #6 Hamilton Heights 67-44 in regional semis and #3 NorthWood 53-40 for regional championship.
• 10-1 vs. other 3A teams this season.
• Split two games with 2A finalist and Summit Athletic Conference rival Fort Wayne Luers. Lost to 1A finalist Fort Wayne Canterbury 79-70 on Jan. 14.
• Team finished third (5-2) in Summit Athletic Conference race this season.
• David Miller served as head coach of Indiana All-Stars and earned a split in last summer’s annual clash with Kentucky All-Stars. Miller is 144-66 in nine years at Concordia, 324-158 in 22 years overall. He ranks 11th among the winningest active coaches in the state.

Class 4A: Chasing its first state title, can Columbus North stop the North Central (Indianapolis) momentum that began after beating No. 1 Hamilton Southeastern?

#10 Columbus North Bull Dogs
• Ranked #10 in ICGSA 4A poll and #12 in non-class IBCA poll.
• Columbus North making its first appearance in girls basketball state finals.
• Bull Dogs won first regional championship this season after 13 previous attempts.
• Ended 16-year sectional title dry spell with its 66-25 win over crosstown rival Columbus East on Feb. 11.
• Bull Dogs began season 4-3 but have reeled off 19 consecutive victories including a 49-42 win over #7 Greenwood in the regional and 50-46 overtime thriller over Ben Davis in the semistate. The win over Greenwood avenged one of their regular-season losses.
• Shared Conference Indiana title with Bloomington South this season with 6-1 record.
• School looking for 34th IHSAA state championship overall and second this school year. The boys cross country team won its third consecutive state title at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute on Oct. 29.
• Team is coached by second-year leader Pat McKee (42-10), who is a former sports editor with the Indianapolis Star. The winner of numerous professional awards, he was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008 and the Indiana Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Hall of Fame in 2009.

Girls Basketball State Tournament History
First Appearance

North Central (Indianapolis) Panthers
• Ranked #14 in non-class IBCA poll and unranked in 4A ICGSA poll.
• North Central playing in fourth state finals and making third appearance in state championship game.
• Panthers have knocked out four top nine teams during tournament run including top-ranked and previously undefeated Hamilton Southeastern 42-39 in the sectional opener Feb. 8. Have also beaten #8 McCutcheon 55-45 in OT in regional semis, #9 Fort Wayne Snider 47-33 in regional final, and #2 Penn 65-50 at semistate.
• Team captured first regional and semistate championships in seven years since back-to-back state titles in 2004 and 2005.
• Like its opponent, North Central endured a three-game slide but won its final two regular-season games prior to the tournament, including a 42-38 road victory over 3A finalist Mt. Vernon (Fortville).
• Team finished third in Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference race with 5-2 record.
• School looking for 58th IHSAA overall state championship (#2 in state history). Last title came in 4A boys basketball in 2010.
• Head coach is DeeAnn Ramey who is in first year with team. She was starting guard for Mooresville in 1978 State Finals and was an assistant coach at Roncalli in 1986 State Finals.
