Top-ranked Perry Meridian finished another perfect season (27-0) as coach Jim Tonte and the Falcons celebrated at center mat with a 43-14 victory over No. 2 Crown Point (23-1) in the 17th Annual IHSAA Team Wrestling State Finals at Center Grove High School in Greenwood.

The title is the second in a row for Perry Meridian, which finished runner-up four times (1992, 2002, 2004, 2009).
 
The Falcons’ championship match was convincing, and the road to the title match was much of the same. Perry Meridian advanced to the championship round with a 52-19 quarterfinal victory over No. 14 Warren Central. In the semifinals, Perry Meridian defeated No. 3 Evansville Mater Dei 40-19. 

In the other semifinal, Crown Point beat No. 4 Indianapolis Cathedral 36-21.

The championship match started with the 106-pound weight class, where Perry Meridian sophomore Jacob Cottey won by first-period fall over junior Brett Ervin. Cottey’s pin vaulted Perry Meridian to a 6-0 lead, and the Falcons never trailed in the final match. 

Freshmen Brandon James defeated Crown Point frosh Darden Schurg at 113 with a 13-10 decision after jumping out to a 12-3 lead and hanging on for the victory.

After a scoreless first period at 120, Perry Meridian sophomore Aidan Kenny broke the tie with a reversal in the second period. The third period started with Crown Point sophomore Josh Fuqua down 2-1, but he pulled out a 3-2 victory with a reversal in the final minute.

Crown Point sophomore Trevor Burlison and Perry Meridian sophomore Cody LeCount went the distance at 126 with LeCount coming out on top with an 8-4 decision. 

At 132, individual state champion Perry Meridian senior Jared McKinley jumped out to an 8-3 first-period lead over CP senior Cameron Halsted. The match ended in a technical fall (25-10) for McKinley.

The 138-pound class saw its second fall of the match as Perry Meridian junior Nick Bova wasted no time in pinning junior Tyler Burlison in a mere 55 seconds.

At 145, Crown Point senior and four-time individual state champion Jason Tsirtsis won by tech fall (19-4) over Perry Meridian junior Riley McClurg. 

Junior Paul Matthews of Perry Meridian went the distance with Crown Point senior Trevor Blue at 152, with Matthews posting a 9-1 major decision.

The 160-pound class saw Perry Meridian senior Kirk Johnson blank senior Jake Fuqua in a 5-0 decision.

Crown Point junior Dustin Schurg moved up a weight class to wrestle at 170 to take on Perry Meridian junior Jake Masengale, but Masengale proved too much as he won by first-period fall to get the party started for the Falcon faithful. 

At 182, Perry Meridian senior C.J. Martin won a 9-1 major decision over CP junior Jacob Hazi.

Crown Point junior Matt Langbehn posted a 10-4 decision over senior DeVante Ash at 195.

Senior Tyler Kral of Crown Point – last week's 220 state champion – won a 7-0 shutout decision over Perry Meridian senior Jordan Naughton.

The battle at 285 pitted Perry Meridian junior Donte’ Winfield against CP senior Josh Swope. Winfield won the final match with a 7-2 decision.
