Barnes wins Daviess County Spelling Bee

Kaytlyn Barnes of Winston correctly spelled "cytoplasm" to take first place at the annual Daviess County Spelling Bee. 

The contest was held at North Daviess High School in Jameson on Tuesday, February 22.    

Barnes is in seventh grade and is the daughter of Clint and Shawna Barnes of Kidder. 

Kristen Booth of Pattonsburg took second place.  She is the daughter of Laura and Randy Booth and is in the eighth grade. 

Morgan Farrell of Winston was the third place speller.  He is in seventh grade and is the son of Tonya and Greg Farrell. 

Megan Redman of Gallatin took fourth place.  She is in fifth grade and is the daughter of Jennifer and Dwight Redman.

Barnes and Booth will represent Daviess County at the Northwest Missouri Regional Spelling Bee, which will be held on Saturday, March 12 at 1 p.m. at the St. Francis Xavier Parish Center in St. Joseph.  

Farrell and Redman will be the alternates.

Other spellers who competed were Maggie Farrell, Jacob Hullinger, Delilah Gadd, Dylon Kessinger, and Stephen Evans of Winston; Jacquelyn Flanders, Meredith Riley, Alex Argyle, Jaylee Baker, and Macon Allen of Gallatin; and Peyton Jones, Justin Booth, Caleb Teel, Alexis Harris, Kari Cruthis, Maria Savage, and Geoffrey Hartley of Pattonsburg.

Judges for the Daviess County Bee were Kim Brammer (Gallatin), Kimberly Ray (Winston) and Amy Mefford (Pattonsburg).  Gregg Hartley (North Daviess) was the pronouncer and Nikki Robertson (North Daviess) was in charge of registration. 

Next year's spelling bee will be held at Pattonsburg.
