Harlem Hands Belvidere North First Loss

December 3, 2012
Harlem High School

The Harlem girls basketball team had to dig deep to pull off a 50-47 upset win against Belvidere North in NIC-10 action Friday.

The Huskies (5-2, 2-0 NIC-10) led by 10 with 4:47 left, before an 8-1 run got North to within three at 43-40 with 1:22 remaining, led by Keri Dodson (11) and Anna Martensen (8).
Martensen’s basket pulled North closer, but Miranda Paddock’s two free throws ended the spurt as Harlem extended its lead at 45-42 with 1:10 left. Later, North’s Paige Honeycutt hit a 3-pointer that made it 47-45, but the Huskies sealed the victory by converting three of four free throws.
“I keep telling my kids to take it one game at a time, because each team will be a challenge in this conference,” Harlem coach Luanna Kish said. “This is a wide open conference. Belvidere North is a good team and they weren’t going to lay  down. I told the kids you’ve got to play until the final buzzer.”
