MACHESNEY PARK — Belvidere hung tough for three quarters with Harlem, but when the slugfest finally ended, the Huskies prevailed taking a 40-21 NIC-10 football victory in Friday’s matchup.
Harlem (3-1) needed three fourth-quarter scores to break a 21-21 tie.
Kevin Witcik scored on a 52-yard touchdown run that gave the Huskies the lead at 28-21. That was followed by quarterback Justin VanWambeke’s 53-yard TD and his 38-yard TD pass to Erik Cunningham eventually sealed the win with 6:35 left.
“They gave us everything we wanted and more,” Harlem coach Jim Morrow said.
VanWambeke finished 8-for-13 for 107 yards with two touchdowns. He connected with Witcik on a 35-yard TD pass that had them leading 21-13 in the third quarter.
VanWambeke also did all the team’s punts and kickoffs in the game.
