Mt. Vernon 50, Yorktown 37: The Marauders used a suffocating second quarter to take the lead for good and finish out a 19-1 regular season.
The Marauders outscored Yorktown 17-1 in the second quarter to take the lead for good. MV led 29-16 at halftime and then broke it open in the third, going up 40-24 headed into the final stanza. The lead was, at one time, 18 points.
Yorktown cut it to five, but MV's free throw shooting helped the Marauders pull it out.
C.J. Coleman had 20 points to lead the second-ranked Marauders, including 18 in the first half. Stephen Turner scored 10 points and Dan Werner eight.
MV also finishes conference play with a 6-1 mark, and clinches second in the HHC.
It was Senior Night for Turner and Anthony Burnett, playing their final regular-season home game. However, MV will host the sectional, which begins Tuesday night. The Marauders open up against Brebeuf at 7:30 p.m. Listen to LIVE coverage at HancockCountySports.com.
New Palestine 53, Greenwood 50: The Dragons struggled to shoot for three quarters, but three 3-pointers and a three-shot free throw allowed them to open the fourth with a 12-0 run that put them ahead for good.
Michael Morris led the way with 15 points and eight rebounds, and his 3-pointer to start the fourth quarter ignited the Dragons. It gave NP a 34-33 lead -- and the lead for good. Ryan Curry hit a 3-pointer and a three-shot free throw on the ensuing possessions, and Justin Ikerd also drained a 3-pointer to put NP up 43-33.
Greenwood answered with 3-pointers on consecutive possessions -- one of which was answered by Morris -- and a midcourt steal-and-hoop by Jaren Hornbeak to cut the lead to 46-44, but NP's free throw shooting helped put the game away. The Dragons hit 7-of-10 from the stripe down the stretch, and used solid defense to keep the Woodmen from tying the game despite having three possessions with the ball and a three-point deficit.
Curry had 11 points. Ikerd had four points, but also a team-high seven assists. Solomon Haynes scored seven points. Sophomore Brandon Jonas had eight points and six rebounds.
NP finishes the regular season 15-5 -- the fifth back-to-back 15-win seasons in school history. The Dragons will open sectional play Tuesday at Center Grove. We'll have the LIVE broadcast at HancockCountySports.com.
Hagerstown 58, Eastern Hancock 47: The Royals came out with a strong contest against Hagerstown, but the host Tigers pulled away in the third quarter to win.
EH trailed 23-16 at halftime, and 35-26 after three. Hagerstown pushed the lead to 16 early in the fourth quarter to pull away to the victory.
EH finishes the regular season with a 6-14 record. The Royals will face Hagerstown again next Wednesday on the Tigers' home floor in the sectional.
