Tuesday wrap: Marauders stop Shamrocks, Cougars fall

Mt. Vernon 57, Westfield 49: The Marauders bounced back from their first loss of the year by erasing an eight-point deficit in the second quarter and holding off one last rally by visiting Westfield to win their 18th game of the year.

Westfield led by eight midway through the second quarter, but the Marauders rallied to tie the game at 27 by halftime (including back-to-back threes by Stephen Turner), then used a 11-0 run in the third to go up 43-32, maintaining a 43-35 lead heading into the final quarter. The Shamrocks would score the first five points of the fourth quarter to get within three, but MV settled things down to keep the lead within 5-7 oints much fo the rest of the way. Westfield's final lunge came when junior guard Ajay Lawton hit a three pointer with :48.9 remaining to bring the Rocks back to a 53-49 deficit; Westfield stole the inbounds pass after the timeout, but Lawton forced up a well-guarded, off-balance three, and free throws from Anthony Burnett (who was 7-7 in second half free throws after an 0-3 start) and Zach Spears iced the game. The Marauders as a team went 13-13 from the stripe in the fourth quarter, 19-20 in the second half.

MV (18-1) was led by Turner, who hit three 3-pointers in all and scored 18 points, 14 by halftime. C.J. Coleman added 17 points, Burnett nine and Spears 8. Ty Osswald led Westfield with 21 points off five three-pointers. Lawton added 11 (eight in the fourth) and Chase Shaw scored ten for the Rocks (8-12).

Connersville 60, Greenfield-Central 36: The Cougars fell in their regular-season finale, thanks to a hot start from Connersville. 

G-C fell behind 16-3 after a quarter. The Spartans extended the lead to 33-15 at half and 49-23 after three.

Derek Conley led the Cougars with 13 points in the loss.

G-C finishes the regular season 5-15, and will next play March 1 in the semifinals of the New Castle sectional.
