Regional Recap: Marauders repeat

Mt. Vernon won its second straight regional championship Saturday night at Danville, holding off a late charge by Indian Creek to beat the Braves 54-49.
Erica Moore scored 11 of her game-high 23 points in the fourth quarter to help lead the Marauders to the title. Sydney Shelton hit four 3-pointers for 20 points. Maddie Walrod also had seven big points off the bench -- including a 3-pointer in the third quarter as Indian Creek was trying to get back into the game.
The Marauders scored the game's first seven points thanks to a strong start from Shelton, who converted two midcourt steals into layups. But Indian Creek, led by senior Northern Illinois University signee Ally Lehman, rallied back to take a 14-12 lead at the end of the quarter. Lehman hit four free throws, while Brooke Mathena and Alexis McGregor knocking down 3s in the run.
MV started the second with a 9-0 run to take a seven-point lead, and with the game at 23-16, Lehman went down with an apparent knee injury. With her out, the Marauders added six more points to lead by 13 headed into the break.
With Lehman back, Indian Creek cut the Marauders lead to as much as 41-34 in the fourth quarter and had three possessions to cut the deficit even further, but Moore put back her own miss to make it 43-34, and she began to carry her team down the stretch. She scored MV's first 11 points of the fourth, allowing MV to build a 52-42 lead inside the last two minutes. IC rallied and got as close as three, but Shelton hit two free throws with five seconds left to seal the victory.
Candace Danz had 13 for IC. Lehman added 12. Mathena and McGregor added 11 each.
MV (21-4) will play Rushville next weekend in the semistate at either Richmond or Bedford North Lawrence. Indian Creek finishes the year 20-6.
Semifinal: Mt. Vernon 45, Lebanon 44 Mt. Vernon held off the top-ranked Lebanon Tigers, 45-44, in a thrilling regional semifinal battle that saw seven lead changes in the final three minutes in the morning session at Danville Community High School.
The Tigers had one last chance to tie as MV sophomore Shaely Duff fouled Lebanon senior guard Katie Curtis on a three-point shot with :01.2 remaining, but Curtis missed the third free throw and junior forward Erica Moore ripped the ball away from Curtis as time expired.
Earlier in the final minute, Duff hit the three-pointer that put the Marausders up to stay, 43-42. freshman Sydney Shelton added two free throws to extend the lead to three after Lebanon threw the ball away under their basket despite a wide-open look.
The series of lead changes begain with a three from Shelton that put MV up 36-35 with 2:43 to play. Four lead changes would ensue before Duff's 3.
The Marauders had taken their first lead of the game midway through the third quarter at 20-19. That lead was traded twice before MV went up by three with a minute left in the quarter. However, Lebanon scored three buckets in the final minute - two by Curtis and one by backup Kendra Yoder - to reclaim the three point lead (31-28) that they had held at the half (19-16).
Lebanon held a 10-5 lead after 1, as Tiger freshman guard Kristan Spolyar scored seven of her game-high 15 points in the quarter, including five of her eleven free-throws.
Moore and Shelton the Marauders with ten apiece, while Duff had nine and senior guard Rachel Houck added 7. The Tigers got 13 from Curtis alongside 15 from Spolyar.
The Marauders (20-4) eliminated the Tigers (21-4) from the regional semifinals for the third straight year.
