Saturday Boys' BB: Mt. Vernon holds off Lawrence Central
February 10, 2013By Chris Lambert of Hancock County Sports
A few hours before Julie Shelton's Marauders won their sectional title Satuday night, Steve Lynch's Marauders ran their record to 17-0 with a thrilling 51-46 victory over Lawrence Central (6-10). MV held a 31-21 halftime advantage and a 39-28 lead after three quarters, but J.R. Shelt's Bears climbed back slowly in the fourth and, with three-pointers from freshman Kyle Guy and senior Davonte Harris sandwiching two empty Marauder posessions, tied the game at 44 with 2:39 to play. C.J. Coleman immediately scored to put MV back up by two, then after two LC misses on their next posession, Coleman pounced on Guy to create a huge jump ball that favored MV. Coleman then hit the next basket off a feed from Zach Spears to put the Marauders up four, 48-44.
Lawrence Central would get within three, 49-46, and have a look at a three to tie with 26 seconds remaining, but Alan Willis's three was off the mark and MV's Anthony Burnett harassed LC's Devin Heath-Granger into losing the offensive rebound out-of-bounds. Stephen Turner would hit two free throws with 5.5 seconds remaining to close the scoring.
Coleman led Mt. Vernon with 21, while Stephen Turner added 13 and Dan Werner scored 11. The Bears were led by Guy's 18, Harris's 9 and eight points from Devin Heath-Granger.
MV's next game is Friday night at New Palestine; a Marauder win would clinch a share of the HHC title, while a Dragon win would give them the title outright.
We'll broadcast that game at 7:15 pm on HancockCountySports.com.
