February 11, 2013Hancock County Sports
Mt. Vernon rallied from a 10-point fourth quarter deficit to beat Chatard 58-54 and win its third straight girls basketball sectional championship.
The sixth-ranked Marauders (19-4) trailed for most of the game, but rallied from a 44-34 deficit with six minutes left to tie the game at 47. MV finally took its first lead at 49-48 when Sadie Baugh drove the right side of the lane and scored with 2:12 left. Chatard's Remi Ewing answered with a basket, but Baugh rebounded a miss and kicked out to Sydney Shelton for a 3-pointer to put MV up 52-50 inside the final two minutes. Chatard did knot the game up after the two teams traded stops, but it didn't stay tied long.
Erica Moore put back her own miss with 50 seconds left to break the tie, then MV forced a stop, thanks to solid defense by Baugh. Moore found Balbach for a wide-open layup to make it a 4-point lead. Shelton blocked a shot on the other end. Moore added the punctuation mark with two free throws.
Shelton scored 12 of her 18 points in the fourth quarter, while Moore scored eight of her team-high 19 points in the final eight minutes.
"Erica got some big buckets late because she got in position and battled with two players out of them. At the end, Sydney, Erica, some of them played their game they've played all year, rather than playing Chatard's game," MV coach Julie Shelton said.
Chatard led 13-6 after a quarter, thanks to Anna Logan's nine points, and then started the second quarter with a 6-0 run to take a 13-point lead. MV tied the game at 24 early in teh third after trailing 22-16 at halftime, but Chatard answered with a 20-10 spurt that put the Trojans up 10. Logan led the Trojans with 18 points. Ewing had seven of her 12 points in the fourth. Grace Dury scored 11 points.
"I never thought we didn't have a chance. My only concern is that we would ever relax and try to get the game slowed down a little bit. Finally, we got the game slowed down a little bit, ran our offense and finally stopped their fast break," coach Shelton said.
Chatard was 15-of-26 from the line. MV hit 20 shots -- five of them threes -- and 10-of-13 from the stripe.
Rachel Houck scored eight points, including two 3-pointers. Shaley Duff had six points and Baugh three.
MV will play No. 1 Lebanon next Saturday in the 10 a.m. regional semifinal game at Danville.
"This (game) is very good for us, now that we're moving on," coach Shelton said. "It will help us have a lot of teaching points and a lot of things to work on. We needed a battle like this."
