Boys county tourney: Marauders win championship

Mt. Vernon used a solid defensive effort to beat Greenfield-Central 51-20 in the Hancock County championship game Saturday night.
C.J. Coleman had 14 points -- including nine in the first half as MV opened up a 16-5 lead after a quarter and 20-8 at halftime. MV led 37-13 after three as Stephen Turner and Dan Werner scored six points each in the third.
Turner finished with 12 points, Werner with eight for the Marauders.
G-C was led by Derek Conley's six points. Grant Wolfe had four.
MV is now 8-0 on the season. G-C is 1-7. The two teams next play Friday against each other at MV. Webcast will be live at HancockCountySports.com.
Dragons win consolation game: New Palestine won the consolation game 59-34 over Eastern Hancock. Michael Morris had 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting to go along with eight rebounds. Justin Ikerd added 17 points and four steals. Brandon Jonas had eight points and 10 rebounds. Solomon Haynes had six points.
Garrett Hancock led EH with 10 points.
The All-Tournament team was C.J. Coleman, Anthony Burnett, Stephen Turner (MV), Cole Oleksy, Derek Conley (G-C), Michael Morris, Brandon Jonas (NP) and Victor Vincz (EH).
NP improved to 7-3 heading into a Jan. 4 game at Delta. EH is now 2-7 and plays next on Jan. 4 at home against Muncie Burris.
Mt. Vernon 60, New Palestine 39: C.J. Coleman had a big afternoon for the Marauders, scoring 26 points to lead MV to a surprisingly-big semifinal victory.
Coleman got hot late in the first quarter, scoring six points, then added all 13 of MV's second-quarter points to finish with 19 at halftime. He keyed an 18-3 run that saw the Marauders push their lead to 24-11. The Marauders led 29-21 at the half, but a 12-point third quarter run grew the advantage to 20. It was 48-31 at the end of three.
Dan Werner and Stephen Turner had eight points each in the second half. Zach Spears gave MV a big start with six early points, and finished the night with eight.
Michael Morris led NP with 12 points. Brandon Jonas had 10 for the Dragons.
The Marauders remained unbeaten at 7-0, while NP suffered its first regulation loss of the year and is now 6-3. The teams will meet again on Feb. 15 at NP.
Greenfield-Central 54, Eastern Hancock 53, OT: G-C scored 13 points in OT and held off the Royals to win the game in the extra session for its first win of the year.
Derek Conley's late free throw made the difference for the Cougars, who have now played back-to-back one-point games.
Conley had 12 first-half points to lead G-C to a 26-22 halftime lead. He finished the night with a team-high 18 points. Jordan Keener had 12 and Cole Oleksy 11 to lead G-C.
Victor Vincz had 21 points to lead EH.
G-C is now 1-6 on the year, while EH fell to 2-6. The teams will play a rematch on Jan. 26 at EH.
