Girls county tourney: Marauders win 4th straight title

Sydney Shelton scored 27 points to lead the Mt. Vernon Marauders to their fourth straight Hancock County girls basketball championship, as MV beat Eastern Hancock 71-43.
Shelton was one of three Marauders in double-figures. Rachel Houck becomes the first player in county history to play for four county championship teams. She had 17 points. Erica Moore scored 14 for MV.
Kiersten Schrope led EH with 14 points, while Kristen Eischen had nine.
MV is now 10-2 on the year. EH is 10-4.
Cougars win Consolation game: Greenfield-Central won the consolation game 55-37 over New Palestine. G-C led by three at halftime, but outscored the Dragons 19-9 in the third quarter to take a 40-27 lead going into the closing eight minutes.
Savannah Girolami had 19 points, Emily Koers 13, Regan Lewis eight and Shelby Davis seven for G-C. Haley Stratman had 14 points and Natalie Kehrt 10 for NP.
The all-tournament team was Sydney Shelton, Rachel Houck, Erica Moore (MV), Kiersten Schrope, Kristen Eischen (EH), Shelby Oldham, Emily Koers (G-C) and Natalie Kehrt (NP).
Eastern Hancock 59, Greenfield-Central 50: The Royals advanced, using a big game from their inside-outside due of Kiersten Schrope and Kristen Eischen, and a big third quarter to beat the Cougars at EH.
EH used a 20-7 third quarter to pull ahead 41-29, and pull away.
Eischen had 22 points and six rebounds, hitting 7-of-13 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the line. Schrope nearly hit a quadruple-double -- 16 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and eight steals. Hannah Best had nine points for EH. Peyton Neisler added six. Kaytlin Eastes had four blocks.
Shelby Oldham had 12 points and Brooke Bell 11 for G-C. Savannah Girolami added eight.
EH is now 10-3 on the year. G-C falls to 3-8.
Mt. Vernon 65, New Palestine 25: The seventh-ranked Marauders built a 17-point lead after a quarter and never looked back against NP in a home victory.
MV got a big game from junior center Erica Moore, who had 19 points and seven rebounds. She hit 8-of-14 from the floor, as MV hit 53 percent as a team. Sydney Shelton had 15 points, five assists and five steals. Rachel Houck added 10 points, four assists and five steals, while Shaley Duff scored seven.
NP was led by freshman Haley Stratman, who had nine points and eight rebounds. Natalie Kehrt and Adie Lorsung scored six points each.
MV improves to 9-2 on the season. NP is 2-10
