December 21, 2012Hancock County Sports
Eastern Hancock's girls basketball team beat another ranked opponent Friday, knocking off Southwestern (Shelby) 65-59 on the road.
The Royals got a big game from Kristen Eischen, who had 20 points and nine rebounds to lead the team.
Southwestern was led by junior guard Annie Thomas, who had 28 points and seven assists.
EH is now 9-3 on the year, while Southwestern fell to 9-2.
Kiersten Schrope nearly hit a triple-double, with 11 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Hannah Best added 10 points. Kaytlin Eastes had eight points and nine boards. Alora Marshall and Shelby Mourey combined for eight points and 11 boards off the bench.
"A total team effort and nice win," EH coach Jeremy Powers said.
The Royals have now won two games over teams that were ranked at the time they played -- EH also beat Lapel on Dec. 11 when the Bulldogs were ranked No. 10 in Class A.
The 9-3 start is the best for an EH team since DeAnn Edge's 2001-02 squad started 9-3 and actually won 14 straight games en route to an 18-4 mark. EH is also 2-2 in Mid-Hoosier Conference play, knocking off one of the MHC's preseason favorites.
EH next plays Dec. 27 in the county tournament, hosting Greenfield-Central in the first round. The games begin at 10 a.m. and will be broadcast LIVE at HancockCountySports.com. The championship/consolation games will be played at 6 p.m. that night at G-C.
Postponements: Two games were postponed tonight. Greenfield-Central's game at Lebanon has been postponed to Jan. 3. New Palestine's home game against Pendleton Heights has been postponed to Jan. 28.
