Marauder swimmers sweep Dragons

Mt. Vernon's swim teams swept New Palestine in the pool Thursday evening.

The Marauders won a close girls meet 96-89 in a meet that wasn't decided until the final relay, while MV won the boys event 114-71.

Winners for MV in the girls meet were Gloria Gonzales in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, Emily McKinney in diving, Maddie Powell in the 100 butterfly, Jessica Hantz in the 100 backstroke and the 400 free relay team of Haley Moore, Jessica Blackburn, Powell and Gonzales.

Emily Trimpe was a four-event winner for NP, in the 200 IM, 100 freestyle and the 200 medley realy and 200 free relay. Her 200 IM time was .56 off the school record of 2:21.19. Other winners for NP in the girls meet were Erin Trimpe in the 100 breaststroke (ninth-fastest in school history), Addison Virt in the 50 freestyle, the 200 medley realy team of Lily Horn, Erin Trimpe, Virt and Emily Trimpe and the 200 free relay team of Emily Trimpe, Virt, Rachel Wineman and Katie Mustard.

Dixon Tierney (200 free, 500 free, 200 medley relay, 400 free relay) and Brisco Wood (200 IM, 100 breaststroke, 200 medley relay, 400 free relay) wre four-event winners for MV as the Marauder boys won. Other winners for MV in the boys meet were Cole Case in the 100 backstroke, Colin Harrison in the 50 freestyle, Zach Ball in diving, the 200 medley realy team of Case, Wood, Tierney and Harrison; and the 400 free relay team of Brandon Lindman, Wood, Case and Tierney.

Winners for NP in the boys meet were Luke Steigerwalt in the 100 butterfly -- the sixth-fastest time in NPHS history -- Grant Gish in the 100 freestyle and the 200 free realy team of Gish, Steigerwalt, Chris Dodd and Will Coleman. NP coach Steve Maxwell said Coleman 's 1.01-second lifetime-best split led the Dragons to an unexpected win in the 200 free relay.

Maxwell noted several bests for his team -- Hannah Ayer (diving, lifetime best), Natalie Berea (more than 2.5 second improvement on her times in the butterfly and breaststroke), Lily Horn (lifetime best, 100 backstroke), Alex Jacobs (lifetime best by 1.8 seconds in the 200 free relay), Kayla Jameson (lifetime best by 18.7 seconds in the 500 freestyle, season-best in 100 backstroke), Shannon Jones (50 freestyle, lifetime best), Katie Mustard (season-best, 100 freestyle), Megan Prosser (lifetime best in 50 back leg of 200 medley relay), Tricia Roberson (lifetime best relay split in 400 free relay), Addison Virt (lifetime bests in 200 medley relay, 50 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay), Kenzie Wells (lifetime best by 16.2 seconds in 500 free, season-best in 400 free relay) and Wineman (lifetime best in freestyle split of medley relay) set season or career-bests on the girls side. In the boys meet, Dodd (100 breaststroke), Parker Horn (200 freestyle), Conner Page (100 backstroke, 400 free relay split) and Steigerwalt (200 medley relay butterfly split and 100 butterfly) set lifetime bests and David Thompson (400 free relay split) set a season best.
