December 14, 2012By Chris Lambert of Hancock County Sports
Mount Vernon scored the first 16 points of the game en route to a 29-7 first-quarter advantage and an eventual 67-30 homecourt win over the New Palestine Dragons in Hoosier Heritage Conference play Thursday night.
Jacki Negri's young Dragons had no answer for the Marauders' junior forward Erica Moore, who led all scorers with 19 points before leaving the game for good midway through the third. Senior guard Rachel Houck added 12 off three three-pointers while freshman Sydney Shelton scored 11. The Marauders led 45-11 at the break and 57-20 after 3.
Shaely Duff added 9 and Maddie Walrod 6 for Julie Shelton's Marauders, who move to 7-2 (4-0 in HHC play). Senior center Ellie Balbach was unavailable, as was point guard Olivia Coleman, both of whom are out with injuries.
The Dragons got a late surge from freshman forward Haley Stratman, who nailed three second-half triples en route to a 13-point night. Freshman Natalie Kehrt added six for New Palestine (1-7, 0-4 HHC).
Mt. Vernon visits Franklin next Thursday, while New Pal hosts Yorktown Saturday and Pendleton Heights next Friday. The Dragons and Marauders will meet again on December 27 in the Hancock County Tournament semifinals.
