Saturday county roundup: NP basketball, wrestling wins

Boys basketball

New Palestine 59, New Castle 50: Michael Morris scored 16 points and Justin Ikerd added 12 to lead the Dragons to a 59-50 victory over New Castle. 

NP never trailed in the game and led by as many as 13 points early, taking a 17-7 lead after a quarter when Ikerd hit four 3-pointers and Samson Haynes hit a fall-away triple at the buzzer. NP led 30-21 at the half. New Castle used a strong third quarter and early part of the fourth to tie the game at 40-40 early in the fourth, but Morris scored 10 points down the stretch and Solomon Haynes hit two big baskets late to help seal the victory.

Morris scored 10 points in the fourth quarter and 14 in the second half. He also had six assists and seven rebounds. Solomon Haynes added seven points, six rebounds and three assists.  Brandon Jonas also had seven points and seven boards. Samson Haynes added six points. Seth Cox had seven rebounds.

Korey Ryan had 21 points, and Steven Bennett had 17 for the Trojans.

NP is now 2-0 heading into Friday's game at Center Grove.

New Castle won the JV game 40-23.

Whiteland 71, Greenfield-Central 60: The Cougars had a strong effort, but fell on the road to the Warriors.

Derek Conley scored 25 points and Jordan Keener 21 for the Cougars. Dejan Davis scored 22 to lead Whiteland.

G-C is now 0-2 on the year. The Cougars travel to New Castle next Friday.

Whiteland won the JV game 44-38 and the "C" game 36-26.

Indian Creek 60, Eastern Hancock 56: Isaiah McCormick scored 22 points for the Royals, but they fell short in their Mid-Hoosier Conference opener.

The game was close throughout, with IC leading by five at the half and three at the end of three.

EH (0-2, 0-1 MHC) next plays Dec. 1 vs. Southwestern (Shelby). We'll have the broadcast at HancockCountySports.com.


Dragons win at Yorktown: New Palestine swept five matches at the Yorktown Turkey Duals.

The 14th-ranked Dragons beat Bellmont 63-16, New Albany 72-6, Yorktown 36-32, Delta 57-24 and Western Boone 71-6.

Having perfect days for the Dragons were C.J. Red (106), Rylan McCarty (113), Tommy Cash (120), Brian Wagner (182), Noah Grable (195) and Willie Bryan (285). Wagner won all of his matches by fall. In addition, Jared Timberman (132), Gordon Wagner (138), Robbie Elsea (145) and Logan Hunt (152) all went 4-1.

Girls basketball

Marion 52, Greenfield-Central 48: The Cougars fell to the Giants in a game that was close throughout. 

Shelby Oldham led G-C with 11 points. Regan Lewis added nine, Sara Jones eight, and Shelby Davis and Savanna Giorlami six each.

G-C led 18-17 after a quarter and 33-31 at the half. Marion outscored the Cougars 8-4 in the third quarter to take the lead, and 13-9 in the fourth to clinch the victory.

G-C is now 1-4 on the year. The Cougars next play Saturday at home against Rushville.

Marion won the JV game 20-19.

Indian Creek 74, Eastern Hancock 45: The Braves knocked off EH in the Royals' Mid-Hoosier Conference opener tonight.

Hannah Best and Kiersten Schrope had 11 points each to lead the Royals. Schrope added four boards and four assists. Kristen Eischen had six points and 10 rebounds. Peyton Neisler had four points and five rebounds.

IC led 35-25 at the half, but used a 24-6 third quarter to take a 59-31 lead and put the game away.

EH is now 2-2 (0-1 MHC). The Royals host MHC foe South Decatur on Tuesday.
