Home » Football NewsFB 4A SECT. 13: #5 Marauders win title over Delta, 28-13November 3, 2012 By Andrew Smith of Hancock County SportsListen to the live webcast here Mt. Vernon won the Class 4A Sectional 13 title, beating Delta 28-13 Friday night. Tyler Dicks ran for 149 yards and a 73-yard TD. Andy Spears had two touchdowns and Anthony Burnett had a 49-yard TD to give MV a 21-0 lead early in the third. Burnett tallied 151 total yards -- 125 rushing and 26 receiving -- and had a big day with several big blocks to spring Dicks' long TD run, a 36-yard run and 26-yard catch to set up the first TD and a blocked extra point. MV won its first sectional title since 2006 and fourth in school history. The Marauders will visit Cathedral next Fridy night at a site to be announced. The webcast will be right here at Hancock County Sports. Delta threatened first, recovering a fumble at the MV 29, but the Marauder defense held on downs. MV emerged from a scoreless first quarter to put two quick tallies on the board in the second -- Burnett starting a six-play, 77-yard drive with a 36-yard run, then setting up Spears' 2-yard TD plunge with a 26-yard pass on third-and-13. After MV held Delta without a first down for the third straight possession, Dicks took a toss around end and broke a 73-yard run -- aided by a pair of blocks by Burnett at midfield, giving MV a 14-0 lead with 5:26 to go in the half. MV extended the lead to 21-0 when Burnett scored from 49 yards out on the Marauders' first possession of the third, breaking multiple tackles on the play. Delta came back -- QB Cade Jones' arm led two long scoring drives, one of 10 plays, one of 12 -- that ended in 1-yard TD sneaks by Jones -- and cut the Marauders' edge to 21-13, after Burnett blocked an extra point that would've made it a seven-point game with 11:26 left. Delta then forced an MV punt, but a three-and-out gave the Marauders the ball back, and they embarked on an 11-play, 62-yard, 6:02 drive that ended with Spears' 15-yard TD with 1:10 left that put the exclamation point onto the victory. But Burnett had a strong fourth-down run to extend the drive at midfield with just over 3:30 to go in the game. MV outgained Delta 354-216. Jones completed 12-of-27 for 138 yards. MV (11-1) extends a school record for wins in a season heading into next week's matchup with Cathedral, the first in the schools' histories against each other. Delta (8-4) finishes a strong eight-win year as the HHC's second-place team.
