October 19, 2012By Chris Lambert of Hancock County Sports
A solid night for the three remaining Hancock County volleyball teams saw the Cougars, Marauders and Royals score straight-set victories to move to Saturday's sectional semifinal matinee action.
Frannie Stephenson had 19 kills for the Royals, while fellow Senior Jordian Eastes added 34 more assists to her record season. Junior Hannah Best had 5 aces.
"We had some shining moments and some great hustle plays, but overall as a team we just weren't sharp and pumped up to play," G-C coach Rita Rouse said. "It's sectional .... what more motivation do you need? Everybody should be at the top of their game and fired up to play. We have to be much more focused and united on Saturday."
Rachel Irbe led G-C's attack with 18 kills followed by Jordan Bunch with six. Alex Colclazier collected 19 digs. Megan Bradley had 30 assists and Caitey Sosnowski added three aces.
*On the road at Brebeuf, Mt. Vernon defeated Howe 25-9, 25-4, 25-2. The Marauders draw Guerin Catholic at 11 am Saturday morning.
Elsewhere Thursday: 3A #1 Yorktown downed Delta in straight sets 25-19, 25-20, 25-19, to set up a showdown with homestanding Muncie South; Rushville defeated South Dearborn in four sets at Batesville; and Shelbyville knocked off Bloomington South on the Panthers' home court, 25-20, 25-23, 25-16, to set up a Saturday showdown with Columbus North.
