October 12, 2012Hancock County Sports
Mouhamed Konate and Josiah Noska scored goals 1:43 apart in the second half to turn a one-goal deficit into a 3-2 victory for Mt. Vernon over Southport in the Class 2A Mt. Vernon boys soccer regional semifinal.
MV will seek the eighth regional title in school history Saturday night against No. 4 Center Grove, which beat Warren Central 5-0 in Thursday's first semifinal. The live webcast will be here at ihigh.com/hancockcountysports (or HancockCountySports.com).
After Southport's Van Sui Lian scored to make it 2-1 in the 46th minute, the Marauders answered. C.J. Coleman corralled a loose ball in the middle 30 yards away and slipped a through ball to Konate in the penalty area. Konate split two defenders, ran onto the ball and buried it into the far-post netting from 15 yards out on the left side in the 50th minute.
Less than two minutes later, MV's Kyle Cansler was submarined while skying for a header on the left touch line, earning a free kick. Cansler served the free kick to the goalmouth, where Josiah Noska redirected it into the netting to give MV a 3-2 lead in the 52nd minute.
MV then dominated the territory, although Southport had a pair of solid opportunities. An apparent 69th-minute goal was waved off due to a foul -- and a yellow card. Later, the Cardinals' Lian Kam hit a shot from the right corner of the box off the crossbar with five minutes left.
MV took a 1-0 lead when Konate scored his 23rd goal of the year on a play that began with a punt by goalkeeper Corban Hartley. Drew Kiser won the 50/50 ball in the offensive third and got it forward to Konate, who dribbled through two Cardinals to get free in the box and scored in the 24th minute. Southport answered with its leading scorer, Ephraim Tovar, dribbling along the goal line and deflecting a shot off the Marauders and into the net five minutes later to make it 1-1, where it stood going into the half.
Southport took a 2-1 lead early in the second half, when Van Lian dribbled along the goal line and slipped a goalmouth cross to the near post, where Van Sui Lian timed his run perfectly and poked it into the net.
MV's Hartley made six saves. Southport's Caleb Bernhard stopped four shots. MV had a 15-12 shot advantage, including 10-5 in the second half.
Konate's two-goal game gave him 10 goals in the last seven games, and seven multi-goal games for his career. He also became MV's single-season recordholder for goals scored with 24.
In the first semifinal, Center Grove's Gabe Edel scored 56 seconds in, setting the Trojans en route to a 5-0 victory. CG had two goals in the first three minutes, held that edge at halftime and added three second-half goals.
