Wednesday county wrap: NP girls soccer wins, NP/MV tennis updates

Girls soccer

New Palestine 8, Yorktown 1: Senior Lauren Joray had two goals and an assist and Madison Parish added a three-goal hat trick in the Dragons' 8-1 victory over Yorktown.

NP scored six goals in the opening half and rolled from there.

Kristin Wagner factored in on four Dragon goals, scoring once and assisting on three. Amy Hilton added a goal and an assist. Alyssa Mouzin scored the other goal.

Natalie Kehrt and Courtney Smith also had assists for NP, which is now 4-2.

"The girls are really playing well together and finding a rhythm," NP coach Bobby Holden said. "Many players got to play tonight and did well playing in the varsity game. I'm very proud of our varsity starters and bench who started the game of with an amazing six-goal first half. We are looking forward to a fun weekend tournament this weekend."

NP next plays Friday at the Zionsville Invitational against Roncalli. The Dragons then play two games Saturday at Zionsville.

NP won the JV game 6-0.

Boys tennis

Mt. Vernon 5, Anderson 0: The Marauders won five straight-set matches in a victory over Anderson. 

Bryce Bobb won 6-0, 6-0. Ben Bobb also remained undefeated on the year. Nick Pham won 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3 singles for MV. At doubles, Chandler Hines/Andrew Noble won 6-2, 6-4, while Evan Smith/Matt Hays won 6-0, 6-0.

MV is now 5-2 on the season. The Marauders travel to HHC rival Yorktown for a Thursday match.

Franklin Central 4, New Palestine 1: The Dragons played a strong match against No. 22 Franklin Central, but fell 4-1. 

Brent Barrett won the No. 1 singles match 0-6, 6-2, 6-4. Coach Chris Hardin said Stratton Smith and Connor Swain played strong singles matches, as did doubles teams Evan Poole/Shayan Khokhar and David Thompson/Pete Rusche.

"We played much better tonight," Hardin said. "It was very reminiscent of the Delta match. We were playing great points, hitting with them, but we just weren't coming up with the final point of the game."

Cross country

Cougars 3rd at Chatard: Greenfield-Central's boys and girls teams each finished third at the Chatard Invitational at Graham Martin Park. 

G-C's boys scored 77 points to finish third of six teams. Chatard totaled 34 to beat Decatur Central by one. G-C was led by Zach Bishop (9th, 18:56) and Cody Wilburn (11th, 19:02). Chase VanHalen was 14th, Austyn Tift 21st and Chet Graham 22nd.

On the girls side, Chatard tallied 21 points, Decatur Central 71 and G-C 85 among the five-team field. G-C was led by Kara Purvis, Rebecca Flora and Emily Dupnick, who finished together in 14th, 15th and 16th places, all at 22:43 or 22:44. Nikki Stephenson was 17th at 22:48. G-C's Bailey Thompson was 24th.
