Tuesday county wrap: Soccer teams perfect, busy VB night

Boys soccer

New Palestine 2, Whiteland 0: The Dragons scored in each half to blank Whiteland in their home opener.

While the Dragons held the territorial advantage for much of the opening half, the game was scoreless until the 35th minute, when Ben Richter made a run to the top of penalty area. He was brought down from behind, giving the Dragons a free kick. Matt Ernster nailed the 20-yarder into the top shelf of the net to score the game's opening goal.

Midway through the second half, the Dragons got a key insurance goal when Tyler Singleton slipped a through ball in-between two Whiteland defenders and past the goalkeeper, right onto the foot of senior Solomon Haynes. The finish gave Haynes his first career varsity goal.

Jaron Pridgen made it stand up in net with the shutout.

"The boys played a very solid defensive game and came away with the win," NP coach Bobby Holden said. "Matt Ernster was the player of the game with a great performance at center back and making the game winning goal off a free kick with six minutes left in the first half. The boys are starting to come together and play some good soccer. The next few games should really help us find our rhythm."

Mt. Vernon 11, Delta 1: The Marauders rolled to their third straight win and second HHC victory.

Mouhamed Konate scored five goals and added an assist. C.J. Coleman had three assists. Drew Kiser added two goals. Matt Powell had a goal and two assists. Josiah Noska, Rhyan Woods and Jake Fontaine also scored for MV. Nathan Wieler and Aaron Gilpin also had assists.

Corban Hartley and Logan Justus combined to make four saves in net for the Marauders (3-0). MV next plays Thursday at home against Warren Central.

Greenfield-Central 5, Greenwood 0: Gabe Collins scored two goals for the Cougars in the victory. Enrique Ferrera added a goal and an assist. 

Trent Barnhart and Jacob Addington also scored, while Ross Morgan, Joe Hudson and Michael Barber all had assists.

Jared Potter and Brandyn Burkhart had the combined shutout in net, as G-C held a 32-6 shot advantage.

The Cougars are now 2-2. They next play Aug. 28 at Pendleton Heights.

Volleyball

Mt. Vernon 3, Lapel 2: The Marauders rallied after dropping the first to sets to beat Lapel 21-25, 10-25, 25-22, 25-20, 15-10. 

MV scored the last seven points of the final game to rally back from a late deficit, winning on Emily White's serve.

Unofficially, Ellie Balbach had 16 kills, Mary Grace Ertel had seven aces and four kills and Lexi Reasor had five kills and five aces.

The Marauders visit HHC rival Pendleton Heights Thursday.

Greenfield-Central 3, Rushville 0: The Cougars rolled to a three-set victory over HHC rival Rushville as they begin the first of a three-games in three-days stretch. G-C won 25-9, 25-12, 25-10.

"This team can be a really fun and exciting group to watch when they bring their A game to the court, and that's exactly what they did tonight," G-C coach Rita Rouse said. "Our serve receive and passing were right on and the hitters were very aggressive at the net. Our offense came from all across the net and we were not nearly as predictable."

Megan Bradley had 16 assists and six digs. Jordan Bunch had eight kills. Rachel Irbe had seven kills, 10 digs and five aces. Maddi Graham had seven kills. Alex Colclazier helped lead the defense with eight digs. G-C had 13 aces, led by Irbe, Caitey Sosnowsky (four) and Shelby Davis (three).

G-C (3-2, 1-0 HHC) plays Wednesday against Anderson, then hosts Eastern Hancock Thursday. Listen to Thursday's contest live at ihigh.com/hancockcountysports!

Eastern Hancock 3, Centerville 1: The Royals had a strong victory against Centerville to improve to 4-3 on the season, winning 25-18, 25-14, 25-27, 25-17.

Lauren Harmon led EH's offensive attack with 12 kills. Melissa Bedell had 10 kills and 12 digs. Jordian Eastes had 37 assists, four aces and eight digs. Tori Bednarski added 18 digs and Lytia Vanderpool had 10 digs for EH.

Brebeuf 3, New Palestine 0: The Dragons dropped a 25-10, 25-13, 25-13 decision to the Braves at home.

Jamie Morris had five kills, nine digs and a block. Katie Morris had three kills, two assists and a block. Cianna Speth had 11 digs.

NP (2-1) next plays Thursday at Whiteland.

Junior varsity

The New Palestine JV girls soccer team fell to Hamilton Southeastern 4-0 Tuesday night.
