Vernon 3, Richmond 1: The Marauders got a strong season-opening victory at Freeman Park against the Red Devils. C.J. Coleman had two goals and an assist, while Mouhamed Konate had a goal and an assist. Coleman scored in the first half to forge a 1-1 tie at the break. In the second half, Coleman fed Konate for the game-winning goal, then Coleman scored on Shane DeWael's assist to give the Marauders a key insurance goal. Logan Justus made seven saves in net to record his first varsity win. MV is 1-0 on the season and continues play Wednesday against HHC rival Rushville. Girls soccer New Palestine 1, Perry Meridian 0: The Dragons won their season opener, with sophomore Emily Sitzman scoring the game-winning goal and Kenzie Morgan posting her first varsity shutout. Sitzman scored on a feed from Amy Hilton in the 61st minute to extend the Dragons' regular-season unbeaten streak. Lauren Joray had the second assist on the goal. Morgan made 13 saves for the shutout. "The girls did a great job staying positive through a tough first half. Perry Meridian has a good team and played very well," said NP coach Bobby Holden, who got his first career victory as a girls varsity coach. "Our team worked hard at focusing on what needed to be done to have more success in the second half. Their hard work, focused attitude and ability to correct themselves on the field lead to a game winning goal by Emily Sitzman with 19 minutes left in the game. I'm very proud of their effort tonight and happy for them to start their season off with a win." New Palestine won the JV game 4-1. Boys tennis Mt. Vernon 5, Shenandoah 0: The Marauders posted five straight-set wins in the season-opening victory. MV winners were Bryce Bobb (6-1, 6-0), Ben Bobb (6-1, 6-0), Grant Williams (6-1, 6-3), Chandler Hines/Andrew Noble (6-2, 6-3) and Mark Alvarado/Brandon Ware (6-1, 6-0). Girls golf New Palestine 189, Knightstown 209: The Dragons improved to 2-0 on the season with a victory over Knightstown at Royal Hylands. It was the Dragons' best full-course round in four years, according to coach Gregg Greene. NP sophomore Abby Poole was low medalist with a 40. Freshman Cassie Rooks shot 45. Sophomore Sarah Rose shot 49 and sophomore Bailey Kamp 55. Girls soccer Warren Central 3, Greenfield-Central 1: The Cougars dropped their season opener Monday evening. Emily Koers scored G-C's lone goal with an unassisted tally. G-C next plays Wednesday at Franklin Central.
