Track and field: NP, G-C athletes advance to State Finals

Several New Palestine and Greenfield-Central athletes had a banner day at the Shelbyville girls track and field regional, advancing to the State Finals.
New Palestine's Sonya Napariu was a two-time regional champion, winning the discus with a throw of 132-2 and the shot put with a distance of 42-0.Corinne Zehner was a regional champion for NP in the 300 hurdles, winning the event in 45.26 seconds. The Dragons' 4x400 relay of Zehner, Nicole Fluegel, Lauren Joray and Lauren Kehrt was also a regional champion in 3:57.41. Greenfield-Central's Regan Lewis won the high jump, clearing 5-7.
Advancing for the Dragons was Fluegel in the 100 (3rd, 26.14), Zehner in the 100 hurdles (3rd, 15.58) and the 4x100 relay of Fluegel, Zehner, Lauren Kehrt and Faith Schonauer (2nd, 49.55). Advancing for G-C was Jackie Landjyt in the discus (3rd, 122-6).
NP finished third with 70 points, but was just four back of co-champions Warren Central and Center Grove, which had 74 points each. G-C finished ninth with 22 points.
At Ben Davis
Mt. Vernon and Eastern Hancock saw their seasons come to a conclusion at the grueling Ben Davis regional, which features several of the top teams in the state.
MV's top finishers were Olivia Coleman in the 400 (59.17), Elizabeth Cook in the 1600 (5:33.02) and Emyha Latimore in discus (117-2), all of whom finished fifth.
Kiersten Schrope led EH with a sixth-place finish in the 800 (2:19.45).
MV finished 11th with 17 points. EH was 19th with five points. Lawrence Central (111 points) outdistanced Pike (106) for the regional title.
The IHSAA girls State Finals will be June 1 at the IU Track and Field complex in Bloomington.
