Monday county wrap: G-C, MV win softball openers

Greenfield-Central 4, Richmond 0: The Cougars avenged a loss from a week ago, knocking off the North Central Conference champions in the opening round of the 4A Pendleton Heights sectional.
Ashley Whitaker homered and drove in three runs for the Cougars, who scored two runs each in the first and fourth innings. Lauren Deeter drove in G-C's other run. Ashley Brunk also had two hits and scored a run, helping pace an eight-hit attack.
Sami Frazier threw a three-hit shutout, striking out eight batters.
The Cougars (20-10) will play at 5 p.m. Tuesday against either Anderson or Connersville in the semifinal round.
Mt. Vernon 12, Brebeuf 0: The Marauders cruised in their sectional opener at home, knocking off the Braves with a powerful effort.
Whitney Estes hit a grand slam and Ellie Balbach threw a two-hitter for the win.
MV is now 20-7 on the year and will play at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the semifinal round against Chatard.
Eastern Hancock opens 2A sectional play at 7 p.m. Tuesday vs. Centerville at Cambridge City Lincoln. New Palestine opens 4A sectional play at 7 p.m. Wednesday vs. Franklin at Center Grove.
Greenfield-Central 6, Pike 4: The Cougars had one more Molinder Field rally on Senior Night.
G-C trailed 3-0 midway through the game, but plated six runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a three-run lead and hold off the Red Devils.
G-C finishes the regular season 17-11. The Cougars open sectional play next Monday against New Castle at Pendleton Heights.
Frankton 8, Eastern Hancock 3: The Royals dropped their regular-season finale to the Eagles on the road. Frankton scored its eight runs on just five hits, but the Eagles broke the game open in the late stages. EH led 3-2 midway through the fourth, but Frankton scored twice in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-3 lead, then scored three more runs in the fifth to break the game open.
Evan Fout tripled, ahd two hits and drove in two. Connor Kramer was 2-for-4 with a double and a run. Hunter Brown was 2-for-4 with two runs.
Tyler Harvey had three of Frankton's five hits and drove in two runs, while the Eagles' Sam Richwine held EH to five hits over six innings.
EH is now 9-15. The Royals open sectional play Wednesday against Knightstown.
Fishers 7, New Palestine 6: The Dragons dropped their season finale in a matchup of 20-win teams, as the Tigers scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
NP scored four runs in the top of the first and led 5-2 in the fourth, but Fishers rallied with two runs in the bottom of the inning. The Tigers tied the game at 6-6 in the sixth with two runs after NP scored in the top half of the inning.
Jacob Barnes led NP, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Nick Ulrey drove in two runs with a double. Cameron Clark also had an RBI for NP. Clark and Alex Rejer had two hits each for the Dragons.
NP is now 6-3 in one-run games and finishes the regular season with a 21-6 mark. The Dragons open sectional play next Monday at Whiteland against Franklin, a game we will broadcast at HancockCountySports.com.
Mt. Vernon 14, Whiteland 1: The Marauders scored six runs in the top of the first, then added seven more in the third to pull away to a victory.
Tyler Langdon drove in four runs for MV and scored twice. Drew Kammerer was 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI. Zach Norman and Jake Mills each had two RBI -- with Mills also scoring twice. Troy Montgomery was 3-for-4 with two RBI and Logan Perdue was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Zach McFarland scored twice.
