Saturday county wrap: MV wins softball tourney

Marauders win invitational: Mt. Vernon closed the regular season with a win in the Mt. Vernon Invitational, beating Elwood 21-4 in five innings and Columbus North 6-5 in nine innings.
The Marauders clinched a 19-7 regular-season record in which they won 13 of their last 14 games.
In the championship game, MV twice rallied from late-inning deficits. The Marauders traiiled 3-1 in the sixth and tied the game in the bottom of the inning. Columbus North scored two in the top of the seventh, but MV rallied again to send the game into extra innings before winning it in the ninth.
Whitney Estes was 3-for-5 with wto RBI for the Marauders, including the game-winning RBI in the ninth. Brooke Saldana was 2-for-5 with a double and a run. Ellie Balbach was 2-for-5 with a double. Ambry Turpen was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Rachel Davis hada n RBI double, and Rachel Houck a triple and an RBI. SHe also scored twice. Emily White was 3-for-4 and scored a run. Balbach pitched eight innings, allowing 10 hits and five runs to get the win.
In the opener against Elwood, MV's bats got going early, scoring six runs in the first and 10 in the second to take a 16-3 lead after two. The scoring was all done in the first three innings.
Estes was 3-for-5 with two runs, two doubles and five RBI. Turpen was 3-for-4 with three runs, a double and three RBI. Houck also had three hits, a run and three RBI. Balbach was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Davis scored three times, drove in a run and hit a double. Saldana had three runs scored. Hope Haynie had two RBI. Balbach and Turpen split the pitching duties, combining to throw a three-hitter, strike out six and allow one earned run.
MV next plays Monday at home in the sectional against Brebeuf at 5 p.m.
Royals go 0-3 at Morristown: Eastern Hancock went 0-3 at the Morristown Invitational, falling to Morristown 5-3, Wabash 18-5 in five innings and Oldenburg Academy 9-5.
The Royals are 9-14 on the regular season with one game remaining, Monday at Frankton, before they open sectional play Wednesday against Knightstown.
Against Morristown, EH fell behind 3-1 after three innings and cut the deficit to one twice, but Morristown answered each time. Connor Kramer was 3-for-4 and Cole Fout had two triples and two runs. Kyle Kramer allowed five hits and struck out five in throwing a complete game on the mound.
Against Wabash, the Apaches scored in every inning to pull away. Cody Wallace was 2-for-3 with a run and a triple. Justin Dunlavy, Dalton Korlowicz and Austin Denny also had RBI for EH, which was held to three hits. Three pitchers scattered 12 hits and struck out eight. Wallace took the loss, allowing nine runs -- but only three earned -- in 2 1/3 innings.
Against Oldenburg, the victors scored four runs in the third inning to turn a 3-1 deficit into a 5-3 lead. Oldenburg then scored three in the bottom of the sixth to turn a one-run game into a 9-5 one. EH got hits from Evan Fout, Connor Kramer, Hunter Brown and Dalton Korlowicz, with Kramer hitting a double. Coston Brown, Korlowicz and Kyle Kramer each had RBI. Coston Brown allowed five earned runs and struck out one in five innings to get the decision for EH.
