Softball roundup: Balbach throws no-hitter; NP, G-C also win

Ellie Balbach threw a no-hitter for Mt. Vernon as the Marauders beat Hamilton Heights 12-0 in MV's softball season opener Tuesday.
Balbach struck out six through five innings of work in the game shortened by the mercy rule. She also had a good day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI. Whitney Estes was 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBI. Rachel Houck was 2-for-4 with two runs, a double and an RBI.
The Marauders jumped ahead 7-0 after three innings, scoring a single run in the first, two in the second before breaking things open with a four-run third. MV added five more runs in the fifth to finish the game via the mercy rule.
MV next plays April 7 against Rushville.
New Palestine used a big inning to beat Warren Central 10-7. Macey Hutchinson earned her first varsity win, allowing four earned runs and five hits in 4 1/3 innings. Lizzie Garrison came on in relief to earn the save.
Alexa Cavin went 3-3 witha double, 2 runs and 2 RBI, Audrey East had 2 hits including a 2-run home run. Carrie Matthews had 2 hits with a double and an RBI. Liza Fiers also had 2 hits.
NP scored one run in the top of the fourth to break a 4-4 tie and then broke the game open with a three-run fifth.
The Dragons (2-0) conclude their pre-Spring Break schedule today at home against Lawrence Central.
Greenfield-Central posted an 8-2 victory over Speedway in its season opener Tuesday. Sami Frazier hit 3-run homers in each the first and second innings to pace the Cougars to a 6-1 lead. Jena Zook hit a solo homer to pace a powerful start for G-C. Ashley Brunk was 3-for-3 and scored three times. Lindsey Hardwick also had a pair of hits.
Frazier also scattered three hits to get the pitching victory, allowing one earned run and striking out seven in the complete game.
