Junior Erin Lehman hit a 3-run homer and New Palestine pounded out 13 hits in a 12-2 season-opening softball victory over Whiteland on Monday afternoon.

The Dragons scored in every inning in the victory.

Lehman's homer launched a six-run fourth inning that continued when NP loaded the bases and got an RBI single from senior Clare Myers and two wild pitches to score Liza Fiers and courtesy runner Rachel Vawter to put the Dragons ahead 10-2. Lehman singled and scored on Prosser's third hit of the game in the fifth and Audrey East -- who preceded Lehman's homer with a long double in the fourth -- knocked her second hit of the game to end it in the sixth on the mercy rule.

Prosser (3-3, 2RBI), Lehman (2-3, 3R, 3RBI, HR), Liza Fiers (2-4, 2R), Myers (2-3, 2RBI) and East (2-5, R, RBI) led the Dragon attack. Leadoff hitter Alexa Cavin also reached all five times she came to the plate, with three walks and reaching on two errors. She scored a run and stole three bases, as NP had four steals in the game.

Starting pitcher Lizzie Garrison scattered nine hits and no walks in 5 2/3 innings to get the victory. Freshman Kaylin McMurray finished the game by inducing an out on her only pitch.

The Dragons are 1-0 and next play Tuesday at Warren Central. They will return home Wednesday to face the Lawrence North Wildcats.
