CLASS 3, DISTRICT 8, at Montgomery County HS...................
The Hallsville Indians captured their 14th District title last night in a thrilling victory over the #1 seed Centralia Panthers. The Indians, now 13-8 on the season, put up a 6-run spot in the 3rd inning and held off the hard-hitting Panthers for a 9-7, Class 3, District Championship. Both teams' defenses played ragged as Hallsville committed four errors and Centralia had five miscues leading to eight unearned runs, four for each club. But Hallsville's three runs in the 6th, all earned with five singles, one hit batter, two sacrifices, a wild pitch, and a stolen base, provided the winning margin.
Ryan Long led off in the 6th with a single up the middle; Tracy Fulton executed a perfect sac bunt; Sean Wooten pulled his second base hit of the game into left sending Long to third. Wooten stole second and Cole Burkett rifled a shot past the third baseman, Chandler Kovar, scoring Long. Collin Drummond flew out but drove the ball deep enough to right to score Wooten on the tag up. Nathan Goett singled to center on a hit-and-run that sent the hustling Burkett sliding safely into third CJ Ashburn yanked a hard ground ball between the shortstop and third baseman knocking home Burkett for Hallsville's third tally. Trickel was hit with a pitch to load the bases, but Lucas Stewart was caught looking at strike three to end the rally.
But the Panthers made it way too interesting in their final at-bat. When starting pitcher, Ashburn, walked the lead off batter, Derrek Trickel was summoned to halt Centralia's bid for a comeback. First-team all-district player, Drandon Freeman, slapped a single through the right side of the infield, but Justin Eikel, who had drawn the base on balls, ventured too far rounding second and was caught in a rundown for the first out. Trickel then fanned Zach Etzler, the Panthers number three hitter for out number two. Centralia was not ready to go down without a fight though as Chandler Kovar singled and Tyler Spurling doubled to score Freeman. With the score now 9-7 and the tying runners in scoring position, Trickel struck out Tyler Roberts for the final out advancing Hallsville to the next round in the state playoffs. The loss for Centralia was only their seventh against 16 wins.
Ashburn (10-1) pitched six innings for the win, surrendering seven hits and three walks. He struck out five and three of the seven runs scored off him were earned. trickel picked up his first save on the season despite allowing three base hits; he fanned two of the five hitters he faced.
Offensively, Hallsville had four hitters with two hits each: Ashburn, Trickel, Long, and Wooten. Trickel knocked in two runs while Burkett, Drummond, Goett, Ashburn, and long each had one RBI.
The Indians, one of 16 district champions in Class 3 in the state, will host District #7 champion, the Palmyra Panthers in a rematch of last year's sectional game. Hallsville was a 9-0 winner a year ago on the way to a final four appearance. The sectional game will be on the Hallsville field on Monday, May 26, at 2pm.
