On Monday and Tuesday, Matt Thunhorst competed at the Missouri Class 2 State Golf Championships at Twin Oaks Country Club in Springfield, MO. On Monday, Matt shot a 93, which left him in 78th place after the first day. He had a tough start to his day shooting a 51 on the back 9, but rallied when he got to the front 9 shooting a very strong 42 to finish his day.
On day 2, Matt again had a tough start on the back 9 but pulled it together to finish the back 9 four strokes better on the 2nd day shooting a 47. On the front 9, he continued to play steady golf shooting a score of 45 to finish day 2 with a 92. Matt finished his day and his high school career in exciting fashion as he chipped in for birdie on the last hole of the tournament and of his high school golf career.
Overall, Matt finished tied for 77th place with a two day tournament total of 185. When the district tournament started 3 weeks ago, there were approximately 425 golfers competing in the state at the Class 2 level. When it was all said and done, Matt finished amongst the top 20% of all golfers in the state of Missouri in Class 2. In looking back over his golf career, Matt has come an incredibly long way from his freshman year (when "he was the worst on the team" as he put it) to finish with a very strong senior year and a trip to the state championships. This was his goal after last season ended and he worked incredibly hard through the summer, fall, and then this spring to achieve that goal. I'm very proud of Matt as he earned everything he got this spring through his hard work and determination.
Thank you to everyone for their support this season and we're hoping we can keep building our golf program on the success that was started this season by this senior class!
