Comets defeat Martinsville 41 to 7
September 26, 2009 Halifax Co High School
Senior Halifax County quarterback Patches Trent shredded Martinsville for 500 yards through the air, including six touchdown passes, and the Comets routed the Bulldogs, 41-7 Friday night.
Trent finished 29-for-49 passing on the night, before sitting down in the second half.
Halifax struck quickly and led 20-0 at the end of the first period. Martinsville later caught Halifax napping on a reverse, but the Comets answered decisively and put the game away by halftime.
Starting on the Comet 20 after the opening kickoff from the Bulldogs, Trent connected with Markee Brooks on a dazzling 85-yard scoring pass with 11:35 left in the first period.
Halifax got hit with an excessive celebration penalty after the play and specialist Jordan Keck missed the conversion.
Martinsville stalled on its ensuing possession, and HCHS started on its 18. The Comets wasted little time, breaking through with a 65-yard touchdown pass on an inside screen to tailback Thomas Logan with 7:52 left in the first period. Keck hit the conversion, and the Comets led, 13-0.
Martinsville was flagged for intentional grounding on its ensuing possession, and HCHS got decent field position again. The Comets moved quickly, capping their third scoring drive of the night with a 35-yard scoring pass from Trent to Lemal Adams with 6 minutes left in the first period.
HCHS added three more touchdown passes before halftime on a blazing night for the Comet offense, while Martinsville got on the board by catching the Comets off guard
Trent fired a four-yard touchdown pass to Kendall Adams with 7:06 left in the second quarter, and HCHS added the conversion for a 27-0 lead.
The Comet senior later connected with Brooks on an electrifying 70-yard scoring pass, featuring some elusive moves from the Comet wideout. HCHS extended its lead to 34-0 with 5:07 left before halftime.
Martinsville finally got on the board on a well-executed 54-yard reverse from Cedric Tarpley, and Colin Welch added the PAT with 2:40 left in the second period.
But Halifax refused to let up and Trent capped an impressive drive with an 18-yard scoring pass to Thomas Logan with 1.6 seconds left before the half.
Trent was picked off twice, but the Comets won the turnover battle, forcing three fumbles.
The Comet offensive line, which had generally struggled with consistency in its effort to protect Trent earlier this season, did an excellent job giving the senior quarterback time to throw Friday night.
Neither team scored after halftime.
HCHS, which travels to Magna Vista this week, improved to 1-4.
Martinsville is also 1-4 on the season. |
