Meet the Grand Rapids Thunderhawks Varsity Coaching Staff
Greg Spahn: Head Coach and Quarterbacks
Spahn is teaching social studies at GRHS and has nine years of teaching experience (5 years at Bigfork, 4 years at Carson Middle School). He earned his bachelor's degree from UW-River Falls and his master's degree from Bemidji State University.
Spahn has been married to his wife, Sarah, for nine years and they have three children, Oliver (6), Elliot (4), and Analise (2). In his spare time Spahn enjoys spending time with his family, fishing with his boys, and preping for football.
Bill Kinnunen: Defensive Coordinator, Offensive & Defensive Line
Troy Gunderson: Special Teams Coordinator, Wide Receivers & Defensive Backs
Prior to coming to Grand Rapids, Gunderson was the defensive coordinator at Onamia High School, as well as spending time as the 9th grade and Sophomore coach at St. Cloud Tech High School. Gunderson played high school football for Hall of Fame coach Steve Ott at Deer River, where he was a part of three state tournament teams.
Gunderson teaches 9th and 10th grade English and Public Speaking at GRHS. He received his bachelor’s degree from St. Cloud State University and completed his teacher licensure program at Bemidji State University.
Coach Gunderson has been married to his wife, Angie, for 14 years and they have two daughters, Noelle (11) and Olivia (8). Away from football, Gunderson enjoys golf, hunting, fishing, and spending time with family.
Chad Anderson: Running Backs and Linebackers
Coach Anderson begins his second year with the Thunderhawks after joining the program in 2013. He coaches the running backs and linebackers, and coaches the defensive side of the ball on game night. Overall, Anderson has 17 years of coaching experience under his belt. Besides football, Anderson coaches track and field for the Thunderhawks and helps run the speed and strength program for the football team.
Anderson went to high school at Blue Earth Area High School, where he was an all-state football player. He also played basketball, track and field, and baseball in high school. He then went on to play college football at Luther College in Iowa and at Mankato State University, where he was an All-American.
Anderson teaches physical education at Forest Lake Elementary and has 16 year of coaching experience, teaching in Minnesota, Iowa, and Colorado.
Coach Anderson has been married to his wife, Shannon, for 14 years. They have one son together, Hadyn, who is 12. In his free time Anderson likes to hunt, fish, ride motorcycle, and snowmobile.
