Griffin drops Ola, finishes regular season 9-0!

MCDONOUGH, Ga. - Chandler Worthy ran for a pair of 1-yard touchdowns, Tyler Hamm tossed an 8-yard TD pass to Ty Turner and Aaron Mathis broke off a 23-yard TD run as the Griffin Bears remained undefeated on the season, topping Ola 28-7 Friday night in the Region 3-AAAA Division A finale for both teams.

By winning, Griffin kept pace with Region 3-AAAA Division B champ Starr's Mill which remained undefeated too with a 42-8 win against Harris County. No. 5-state ranked Griffin (9-0, 6-0 Div. A) will host No. 8-ranked Starr's Mill (9-0, 6-0 Div. B) for the Region 3-AAAA championship thanks in part to wins by Upson-Lee and Spalding that allowed the Bears to finish with more quality points than Starr's Mill to win out on the third tiebreaker.

Griffin broke open a 7-all tie at the half by scoring on its first two drives in the second half to carry a 21-7 lead into the fourth quarter. The first drive ended on an 8-yard TD pass from quarterback Tyler Hamm to tight end Ty Turner and the second on a 1-yard TD run by Worthy. By the time Aaron Mathis broke off a 23-yard touchdown run with 6:51 to play, the game was a forgone conclusion.

However, the game started more ominously for the Bears.

Griffin, which fumbled the opening kickoff, scored on a 1-yard touchdown run by Chandler Worthy with 5:05 left to play in the first quarter on its next possession. The run capped a 78-yard, 13-play drive that consumed 5:37.

Worthy, who has been the backup to Wontavious Washington - Griffin's leading rusher with 1,178 yards and 13 touchdowns, who sat out Friday's game recovering from a pulled hamstring - led the drive, rushing 10 times for 56 yards. Worthy, who entered the game with 42 yards and 1 TD on 10 carries for the season, ended the night with 80 yards and 2 TDs on 20 carries.

Ola, which couldn't mount anything on its first three drives, struck pay dirt on its fourth drive which ended on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Neil Gandee to Brad Blount on fourth-and-goal from the 4.

Gandee's pass capped an 11-play, 57-yard drive that was aided by two Griffin penalties. Their leading rusher on the night, Victor Griffin, (12-68) spearheded the drive with runs of 7, 6, 7, 6 and 1 yard. The loss snapped a two-game win streak for Ola (3-6, 2-4).
