Week #10 Griffin Christian Wins, Makes State Playoffs Again!
October 31, 2010By Alan Richards of Griffin, Georgia High School Football
Anthony Lewis ran for touchdowns of 2, 7 and 12 yards, and Jordan Piland threw TD passes of 13 yards to Coleman Bailey, 33 yards to Austin Gill and 40 yards to Tony Mathis as Griffin Christian defeated Mount Vernon Presbyterian 49-14 Friday night to garner the fourth and final playoff berth in GISA Region 2-AAA.
It was the second win in a row for Griffin Christian (5-4 overall, 3-3 region) which will close out the regular season next week at last-place Dominion, while Mount Vernon fell to 5-4 on the season and 2-4 in the region.
It's only the second year Griffin Christian has made the state playoffs. The Crusaders qualified for the GISA Class AA playoffs last year in only their fourth year of existence. This year, their first in Class AAA, they will open on the road against the winner of Deerfield-Winsor and The Westfield School in two weeks in the opening round of the GISA Class AAA state playoffs.
Griffin Christian led Friday's game 21-14 at the half before putting Mount Vernon away with 28 unanswered points in the second half.
Lewis ended the night with a team-high 131 yards on 22 carries, while Piland was 5-of-5 passing for over 100 yards.
Griffin Christian has captured the fourth seed from GISA Region 2-AAA no matter what happens next week with John Milledge.
With the Crusaders' 41-21 road victory over John Milledge back on Sept. 17, Griffin Christian gave itself the head-to-head tiebreaker over John Milledge if the teams finish the regular season tied in the final region standings.
