Griffin Bears win 7th in a row, sets up showdown with Dutchtown for Division Title

Griffin High quarterback Corey Moore (14) takes off on a touchdown run in the first half Friday night at Memorial Stadium against Union Grove. Moore scored from 40 yards out. The No. 5 state-ranked Griffin High Bears football team showed it can win a game when its high-powered offense wasn't clicking on all cylinders.

Griffin used a punishing defense to smother the Union Grove Wolverines 24-0 Friday night in Region 3-AAAA Division A action at Memorial Stadium. Griffin improves to 7-0 overall, 4-0 in the subregion.

Xzavier Dickson led a swarming Griffin defense that stopped Union Grove (2-5, 2-2) at every opportunity in a game that was televised on WSB cable TV. Dickson showed off on senior night, getting 3 sacks, several quarterback pressures and even batted down a pass. Dickson wasn't alone: Defensive mates Eddrick "Nukie Man" Johnson (sack), Deonterri "Boonickey" Davis (sack), Darrius Davis (blocked punt), Stefon Harper, Jahmad Clemons (INT, fumble recovery TD), Ronquerris Davis, Kent Yarbrough and others helped shutout the Wolverines. They even held UG junior running back T.J. Moon to only 33 yards on 12 carries.

Corey Moore started at quarterback for the Bears and scored the game's first TD, running 40 yards for the 7-0 lead at 9:06 in the first quarter. Eddie Glanton's 32-yard field goal minutes later gave the Bears a 10-0 lead which they took into the half.

Wontavious Washington (20 carries, 135 yards rushing) scored his 12th TD of the season, a 22-yard scamper, to give the Bears a 17-0 lead with 8:21 remaining in the third. Davis' blocked punt and Clemons' recovery in the end zone early in the fourth completed the scoring for Griffin at 24-0.

Griffin has a big game next week, traveling to face co-first place Dutchtown Friday, Oct. 22 in what amounts to the Division A championship.

Dutchtown defeated Alcovy 13-0 Friday night to keep pace with Griffin at 7-0, 4-0.
