Home » Baseball NewsRam Record Fourth Victory Over Spring CreekJune 11, 2008 By Shanequa Edwards of Greene Central High SchoolRam Record Fourth Victory Over Spring Creek The Greene Central varsity baseball team romped to a 7-1 victory at Spring Creek on Tuesday, March 11th for its fourth victory of the season. The Rams improved to 4-0 overall with the victory while the Spring Creek Gators dropped to 4-1. Greene Central will host Spring Creek on Tuesday, March 18th and South Central on March 19th. Both games will begin at 4:30. The Rams open play in the George Whitfield Easter Invitation on Saturday, March 22nd at 4:00 p.m. Junior Michael Speedy, senior Trey Beaman, and senior Chris Leggett led the Rams' offense with two hits each. "Trey Beaman, Alex Brann, and Chris Leggett all hit three really good balls, but overall as a team, I was disappointed in our approach at the plate," said GCHS head coach Scott Jones. Junior Justin Everett took the win on the mound for the Rams in relief of starter Michael Speedy. Everett pitched three innings, allowing one hit, one run, one walk, and struck out three. "All of our pitchers did a good job today. Justin Everett did particularly well, going three solid innings in a tight situation," said Coach Jones. Michael Speedy pitched the first two innings for the Rams, allowing one hit, no runs, one walk, and struck out two. Senior Scott Murphy pitched the final two innings, allowing one hit and one walk and struck out one. Greene Central jumped out to an early lead, pushing across a couple of runs in the top half of the opening frame. Alex Brann started the action with a one-out walk. He scored one out later on a blast over the left field fence by senior shortstop Trey Beaman. Spring Creek put runners at second and third in the bottom half of the opening frame with a single by A. Casey and a walk to P. Hayes, but Michael Speedy struck out the next batter to end the threat. The Rams threatened again in the top of the third inning. Junior catcher Alex Brann led off with a walk, and senior first baseman Chris Leggett reached on a one-out error. A fielder's choice and a fly ball to right field ended the threat. Spring Creek cut the deficit to 2-1 with a single tally in the bottom of the third inning. Third baseman J. Mozingo led off with a single, and center fielder A. Casey walked. A. Brogden moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt. Shortstop T. Rogers plated Mozingo with a sacrifice fly to right field. Greene Central carried its 2-1 lead into the fifth inning after both teams went down in order in the fourth inning. Michael Speedy led off the top of the fifth inning for the Rams with a single to left field, but he was erased by a double play. Trey Beaman and Chris Leggett followed with back to back singles, but a popup to first base ended the scoring threat. Justin Everett retired the Gators in order again in the bottom of the fifth inning to keep the Rams in the lead. The Rams broke the game open with a five run outburst in the top of the sixth inning. Third baseman Stephen McDonald started the action when he reached on a two-out error. Center field Chris Manning followed with a run-scoring double to left field. Michael Speedy kept the inning alive with a single to left field before catcher Alex Brann plated Manning with a single to left field. Trey Beaman walked before Chris Leggett cleared the bases with a double to right field. "I was pleased for us to get a win, but I wasn't satisfied with how we played. Eighteen of our 21 outs were either fly balls or strikeouts. I believe we are a better hitting team than that," said Coach Jones.
