Greene Central competed in the Neuse Regional Library Quiz Bowl at Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library on Saturday, February 15th.
The six competing teams included Bethel Christian Academy, Arendell Parrott Academy, North Lenoir High School, South Lenoir High School, Kinston High School, and Greene Central High School.
After defeating Bethel, North Lenoir, and Kinston High School in a hard-fought competition, Parrott Academy took first, as Bethel Academy came in second, and Greene Central placed third.
In the first pairing of round one, Parrott Academy defeated Greene Central 160-150, although Greene Central came back for a win against North Lenoir with a score of 80-70 in the second pairing of round one.
In the second round, Greene Central defeated Kinston High School 130-60 while Bethel defeated North Lenoir 130-30. In the semifinals, Parrott defeated Greene Central 115-65.
In the first pairing of the final round, Bethel defeated Parrott Academy 160-140, but Parrott Academy won the second pairing against Bethel with a score of 205-160.
Dr. Martha Welch, advisor of Greene Central’s Quiz Bowl team, said she “is real proud of how the students did.”
Welch added, “I think the level of questions this year were a little higher level than last year’s questions.”
The Quiz Bowl is very similar to Jeopardy. The students are asked a range of different questions that refer to anything and everything.
Junior Jeffrey Bubak said, “We came in third, and we were all disappointed in ourselves, and we felt like we could’ve done better.”
Greene Central fought hard against Parrott Academy in the semifinals. “I think we competed about average. There were some questions I thought I did really well to answer them correctly, others I had no idea about, along with the rest of the team,” commented senior Alex Gilbert. “I was disappointed in myself, but there’s nothing you can do about it when you have no clue and it’s extremely trivial.”
Gilbert went on to say that the team did extremely well to place third after having to compete against Parrott Academy twice.
Katie Jones said, “I would tell future Quiz Bowl members to not procrastinate and to study.” She also mentioned that she “enjoyed learning and being with friends the most. I will miss the people and the experience as a whole. It was nice to meet a lot of different people as well.”
Greene Central’s team included sophomore Bruce Howell, juniors Jeffrey Bubak and Lucas Upham, and seniors Katie Jones, Alex Gilbert, and P.T. Harrison.
